A different Zieleman

Pullup,
When I lived in South Africa there was a gentleman who every morning would go out and
ride his bike around Sabi Sands (just outside the Kruger Park). The locals used to call him
'meals on wheels'... hmmm wonder if he's still doing that.
Mountain Biking in South Africa is fantastic, especially in the Drakensberg or down on
the cape.

But you can imagine that in Amsterdam the only concern regarding animals during bike rides is not to flatten the stupid Amsterdam pigeons.
So the prospect of encountering Roo's or Wildebeests on your way sounds challenging for a Dutchie

I measured the fork I have and it's about 165cm so I don't think that's going to work.
It's too short for my 55cm frame, I'm guessing it was on a 53cm frame?
Hopefully Pullup can find something for you.

I will certainly have a look for Guido.
The reason I know for sure that the shop hasn't got a spare fork at the moment is that I recently did a little frame swap over there.
I wanted to restore my old frame but was having trouble because the stem was completely stuck after 30 years and furthermore Ko had installed a French threaded Tevano Crank for me back then which made it difficult to find a replacement.
I asked the guy that runs the Zieleman shop at the moment if he could help me resolve the issues and after a little talk he asked if I maybe was interested in a newer Zieleman frame.
He went in the back of the shop and returned with a very pretty green Zieleman frame fitted with an non matching black Eddy Merckx fork. I liked the frame but hated the fork and came up with the idea that if he could remove the fork from my old frame for me and fit it to the newer frame I would buy it from him.
So I bought myself one of the last frames Ko has made and he fitted it with my own old fork.
My remaining frame would have been put in a closet and probably wouldnt be ever used by me but the teenaged son who also was in the shop liked it so I gave my old frame to him.
He then build it very quickly like a modern teen would like his bike nowadays.
Here it is, as you can see without a Zieleman fork in the former Zieleman shop. I will hold back from making comments about the build
I promised to show him my Zieleman when I would finish it and will ask if he can watch for an old Zieleman fork, there were hanging around some Zielemans and he told me he sometimes sold them for old customers.

Thanks Marty and Pullup, that's very nice. I've seen the Dr. yesterday and got home with a different pill that allowed me to muck about in the shed and take the fork out.
Here is a picture and I've also taken one of the saddle for general amusement.
The steerer actually measures 18.1 cm (it's a 55cm frame, too). Maybe this is an opportunity to get a better fitting fork (remember the frame has the 'old style' KZ seat stay cap engravings but the more modern 'Zieleman' engraving in the fork which probably wasn't the original fork anyways...

... it's also been suggested that the fork could be repaired. I'll take it to my local frame builder when I can and ask. What would you think?
On the other hand these legs look pretty darn sexy as they are :-)

... oh and, just in case the track bike doesn't end up with Marty, I might be interested, too. I actually live close by a velodrome and ride on the track quite regularily...

Guido,
The track bike isn't going to end up with me. While I'd love a Zieleman piste and live close to a
velodrome (about 10k from it), I'm just not riding there enough to warrant that bike.
So I say go for it!

It took a little time rebuilding my new Zieleman but it looks like i will finish it this week.
Just to show you what i started with 2 pics of the frame with my old Zieleman fork and old 1st gen Dura ace headset installed.
This poisonous green colour is hard to capture indoors, when I post the complete bike I will take it outside.
As you can see it has the newer style headbadge I don't know how long Ko has used this one but to me it surprisingly gives the frame a more retro look than the other one.
I liked this look with the chrome fork and chrome headset so I decided to try to build the bike with a lot of shiny Dura ace 7400 8 speed.
I ended up with something a litlle more colourful and will add the pics later this week.

Is frame from a complete bike that hung in the shop? I thought an ex Ko's daughter's bike. I assumed that one was build with 653?

I asked them about the tubing, they then called Ko and he said it was Columbus SL after which they gave me the decals fom the ' secret stash'.

looks really good.
The first Zieleman I ever saw was that poisonous green color, sort of like
Bianchi's Celeste but with a bit more yellow?
has me rethinking my future white/blue color scheme

That black Eddy Merckx fork was the reason I didnt want the frame until I thought of using my own
@ Marty I think the Photoflash makes it look wither than it really is, indeed almost Celeste on the picture. It is darker and has a little more yellow.
Can't wait until spring to use it because I didn't get to do much riding last couple of weeks.

Well i finished the build and as I promised it has become a colourful bike.
I am happy and even more so because today the weather was good enough so I got to ride it.
I scored a complete Shimano Dura-ace 7400 gruppo complete with cables and instruction guides for the bike on marktplaats.
The guy also offered me the wheelset and said it had this red anodized rims so he could understand if I did't want those. I thought it would just go allright with the green and decided to complement them with a darker red saddle and bartape.
Some details of the drivetrain
Some more overview pics. I installed the Columbus decals and covered them with a little clearcoat ( on the fork a little lower than normal to cover a rusty spot )
In the end I didn't use the aero Dura-ace 7400 seatpost because I was afraid it could only be mounted just a little bit to high for me and I did't use the Dura Ace pedals because I don't have the shoes for look-type pedals.
Instead I used a superrecord post and some record titanium pro fit pedals.

I thought I should post this here in case anyone's looking for a KZ. I was in SoCal last weekend but this bike is nowhere near my size, San Diego's not really close to LA, and $950 is a lot of money for a bike that 'needs cleaned up.' Aside from that it looks great!
(I used to be able copy photos over but it seems like that is no longer working; at least the links are here for now.)

That is an oldy, Al. The lugs got the same treatment as my Zieleman 'blacky': holes and a slot in the fronts.
Thanks for sharing.

Pullup,
Very nice 1st pic gave me a bit the impression the fork/frame got a hit, but that will be the angle of the wheel I suppose.
Personally I would try to get hands on a red Rolls, but it looks very nice now already. Spring is coming - enjoy!

I know what you mean about the Rolls and do agree, but I have to look if it is a nice dark red leather and then i'll jump on it, I also looked at a nice suede red Concor but decided that was too red.

outstanding! it looks so much like Chris Meerman's Zieleman (the first one I ever saw) that
it's scary. He had black saddle and wrap but otherwise could be same bike.
I like the red, and agree a Rolls would be really nice on this.
I have one of those Zieleman badges, forget who sent it to me, I like it but not
enough to replace my avatar!
makes me think it's time to go cleanup/paint/buildup my oldie (similar to one Al posted).

Pullup,
very very nice. I love the feel of the 7400 'click'. I'm also a great fan of two bottle cages (in Australia). Looks like a very practical yet very classic bike.
I have not been so lucky with my fork. I've been to the local frame builder twice but it's still no good. Second time I watched him work on it. I didn't want to be a smartass but I believe I could have done better myself. At least I've seen the tools and technique required (paid $80 for that :-). Currently, when you install a wheel it almost touches one leg. Mpf. I'll buy the tools and have a go myself.
Alternatively, I guess I'm still in the market for a 18 cm steerer fork...

You could post a picture and it is probably possible for me to give you a reasonable guess as from what period the bike stems

Let's give it a try and use this old thread. It seems there's a lot of knowledge about Zieleman here.
I'm curious about the age of this one and until now I did'nt get an answer. I myself was thinking about the second half of the sixties maybe early seventies. There's no framenumber under the bracket. The only braze-ons are on the chainstay. The sticker of the shop is from Ebbers in Ermelo, the Netherlands, the shop does'nt exist anymore.
Hope you guys and girls can help.
