Dump find gone bad
I thought that my dump guy had a good one for me-a pair of Mavic CXP 12 rims laced to Shimano RX 100 hubs. Even had a good set of Michelin tires mounted and the tubes held air. Hubs spun nicely and the rims were true. Today I try fitted them to a frameset and discovered that they're not 700c, they are 650c (571). So now I have a set of really nice, completely useless wheels.
If it wasn't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all......

Bikes: 1940s Fothergill, 1959 Allegro Special, 1963? Claud Butler Olympic Sprint, Lambert 'Clubman', 1974 Fuji "the Ace", 1976 Holdsworth 650b conversion rando bike, 1983 Trek 720 tourer, 1984 Counterpoint Opus II, 1993 Basso Gap, 2010 Downtube 8h, and...
Well, they say if something looks too good to be true, it is. But wait, you mean 650b (584), or 650c (571)? Either way, I'm sure they are excellent trade bait. If the former... hey, you want to do a trade?

If they're 650B, lucky you!

Were they by chance labeled as 700c (622x15)? If so, I just had nearly the exact same thing happen to me not 2 weeks ago. I'm not sure who was in charge of applying the stickers at Mavic that day, but he was smoking something. It even fooled the guy at my LBS--I had to ask him to mount 700c tires on them to convince him the wheels weren't labeled correctly. "Whoops, you're right! Those are NOT going to fit."
Aside from the brake compatibility issue, they're actually quite fun. Great acceleration! I put them on a build I'm doing for my girlfriend.

wow, that's not what I expected from the title, unless you paid him a lot for them. I was expecting to see something where the repairs ended up giving you tetanus or maybe there was a plague infested rat hiding inside the tubing of a bike you found.
Just look on the bright side, it wasn't a bike with a copperhead waiting to bite you when you pulled the seatpost out.

Did you pay for them or something? You got a nice set of hubs, and sooner or later someone'll want the rims.

"There are actually two ISO 571 sizes:
Narrow 571 mm tires, commonly called 650C (or incorretly called "650" without a letter) or 26 x 1 are used mainly on racing type bikes for smaller riders, and also for some triathlon bikes. This is a size mainly intended for competition.
The same 571 mm Bead Seat Diameter was formerly used by Schwinn as a proprietary alternative to the 559 mm size. Tires in this size will generally be marked as being Schwinn specific on the sidewalls, and will be marked 26 x 1 3/4" (note, that is not the same as 26 x 1.75"!)
The Canadian 26 x 1 1/2 F.12 size is generally interchangeable with the Schwinn version.
Although these two sizes have the same bead seat diameter, the rim and tire widths are so different that they will not generally be interchangeable in practice. "
The tires on these rims are 23mm racing-type tires. I don't think they'd be happy on your Schwinn, and vice-versa.

I still have the half a dozen or so direct e-mails he sent me about Biopace on my system.

There's no good table of contents for Sheldon's site. I'm sure Sheldon would have agreed that it is badly organized. But the contents are very useful and well written. His friend John S Allen is now maintaining it, and if you send him suggestions, he might take them. I don't have his email handy, but it's not hard to find.
