There have been a few post lately about possible crosscountry moves, shorter moves, job changes and losses, relationship and so on.

Well I thought I would added mine to the list. Perhaps since it does not seem to affect Unemployment and other entitlement programs the current budget battle raging in Washington is not real front page stuff this time around. Since Congress has not come to terms with the budget there is little or no money getting through to the DoD and more importantly, to me anyway, DoD Contractors.

Inlight of this being the 3rd year in a row for this plus other shortages the Company I work(ed) for sent us out a polite note last week. They used alot of phrases like core business, value per flight mile, assets off line, stored assets, high yield routes yadda yadda yadda.

To paraphrase "we are downsizing and you are going to fit in the new downsized company" In my last pay stub I received a notice informing me that I was being laid off indefinitely. I could check with Personnel in 12 to 18 months to see if there were any vagancies and where my line (seniority) number was in the process.

I took a few weeks to sort things out and I have made a big decision... rather than collect my meager unemployement I found anew job. I called a company I used to work and I began training today. With a bit of luck by the end of the week I will be crisscrossing the country a Professional Over the Road Driver While the money is good and I really enjoy the work it puts a serious crimp in my passion for C&Vs especially riding. I'll still be a home a few days a month to ride and tinker but no riding several tmes a week. I am not going to have a fire sale or anything but I will not be persuing any new projects. Fortunately for all of you that means I will not be out bidding you Campi and Regina parts for the near future. I may be in your town checking out CL for bargins though and I will certainly be on here quite often as I still need my C&V fix. I am hoping that possibly in a few years I can relocate out west to Salt Lake or Phoniex and move inside so I'll be home and able to start riding more again.

Good luck with the new path. Why not take a bike with you and ride? If I remember correctly, you can only drive for 10 or 11 hours with 10 hours off.

I second the notion of taking a bike with you. Get a C&V folder. Did Bianchi ever make any?

Man that's sucks, by who knows what you'll get on trips on your new jobs, u might but some potential gold mine markets where vintage bikes are worth next to nil, u say ur not taking on any projects but can u really pass up a good deal?

Sorry about the bad news from the PE, and hope this turns out to be a positive direction. Taking the bike with you sounds like a great idea, if it could work. You might get all kinds of great rides in. Plus it would be fun for all of us to look for the rig with a Bianchi on the roof of the tractor. We could have a thread - BG sightings. Maybe a sticky. Anyway, drive safe and godspeed.

I have a friend who teamed up with his wife to do long haul. He keeps a mtb. with him, spd pedals (small, easier to nest) and Zefal fenders, lights. He is getting tired of it, but it has been 10 years.

Sorry to hear but good you were able to make better light of it. I was actually debating between getting my CDL or welding. Though with two little ones at home it's hard to be gone on the road and letting my wife have to deal with everything.

Sounds like an opportunity if you make it so. Iphone plus craigslist app plus being all over the country= more opportunities for bike deals along the way. Just make sure you have room in the sleeper for your new projects.
I am sure you can find a way to sneak a ride in here and there in new places too....

Glad you found another job quickly. Same sentiments as others feel free to look up us WA C&V'ers if you make it all the way across county. By the way, I've seen more than a few big rigs with a bike stored behind the cab.

+1 on bringing a bike along for your trips. Never know where you'll end up, with plenty of us C&V folks spread all over...if there's a layover, you can take in a ride with us.

I don't know what you'll be driving, but some of those Volvo tractors have HUGE living space, with a really high ceiling - my company went to Volvo to sell something, and we held all the meetings in the dining area, which seated 6 handily. You could hang the bikes from the ceiling and sleep under them.

Seriously, I've been through a layoff/job change in the past few years, and congrats for landing on your feet!

Bummer about not the job loss thing. Happened to me about five years ago, forced to retire and less than half the pension I was promised. The big shots on Wall Street are enjoying the other half of my pension as I write.

I agree with others, take a bike with you. Take a beater but solid runner and ride when ever you get a chance at the end of the day's haul. I can even offer an Italian folder, free in this instance, if you are willing to ride an old Olmo that breaks down or folds up, depending on your point of view.
