I sometimes have problems deciding, and usually don't have this much stuff on hand.

At the base of it all is a red Cinelli SC with the black "modern" decals.

To make this object roll, shift, stop and generally operate, I need a group.

Other than the 8-sp stuff, the quality level will be bang for buck-related.

If you have pros and cons, list them. Many here have more Campy experience than I.

Rob, you missed the 'Don't know anything about the above' option for folks like me who only made it as far as the 80's.

Can't imagine why you'd choose between Eurus and Khamsin, except on grounds of cost. Both are good wheelsets, but Eurus wheighs half a kilo less and looks 10 times as good!

I'm really not familiar with pre-built wheels, but if you're going Ergo, might as well go 10s (but silver)

What's not to like about Red and Black?

I know most folks here will say silver, but I voted black. I think you have a little more leeway with the modern black decals. If it were a more classic bike, it would demand silver, and I would go with the record 8 speed and tubulars in that case. I went through the same thought process with my Bianchi. I knew I wanted to go Campy, but I debated between the more modern black/silver stuff or piecing together older silver record stuff. I finally landed on the fact that I had "modern" bianchi decals and therefore, I wasn't as worried about pulling off a classic look as I was about having a great riding steel bike. If I had an older Merckx, I wouldn't have made the same decision.

LOL, haters gonna hate. The other day I went to a LBS and spotted one of the customer bikes awaiting delivery - a top-of-the-line S-WORKS, outfitted with Shimano 2200 (Yes, that is lower then Sora). I looked at it, mystified. The owner just shrugged his shoulders and said "Customer is king".

I was just saying as we're buildng a 99% black Fuji D6 with the black 105, and it looks like it would go 50mph on level terrain, hehe. But whatever, carry on with yerr *modern* Campy. Might as well put on Sram Red and call it a day. It's cheaper, and according to my 24 yr old coworker....wait for it....it's the best shifting group ever made,,,,BD

I haven't seen the frame, but I think either 10 speed group with the 'Bordeaux Gold' Hudz on a red frame would look kind of nice.

Go black to offset the silver. Other than that, can't weigh in much yet because I'm have limited experience with Campy. I'm getting together some silver Veloce 10sp for the 89 Master, though. Got most of the parts with the exception of the wheels, brakeset, and crank at the moment.

For you on that bike? I'd say about 53 x 14 would be a good rolling gear.

A red Cinelli SC w/ black decals will go well with with an all black 10-speed group. But it will look all business. And I wonder if that is what's best for a Cinelli. I prefer the appearance of Campy silver Al finish. There is more of a metal artisan-ship connection to the handcrafted frame. More complimentary IMHO. Personal favorite is 2006 10-speed Record hubs, any model newer skeleton brakeset, silver/carbon plate RD, an Ultra-torque crankset in either Al or CF (a touch of black to balance out).

There is a red Trek with black Veloce 10-speed recently posted. I think it'll look close to it if you go 'black out'.

+1, Eurus, not familiar with that particular choice of wheelset.

8spd is cheaper, chorus is cheaper, and silver just looks better.

I'd go new.

Or maybe a used 10 speed Chorus gruppo for example.

I've been able to snap up some real deals on this gruppo.

So many great choices on new Campy gruppos as well.

...and so many holiday sales going on from the likes of PBK and Ribble.

You could go with a complete silver 10 speed Veloce gruppo with Fulcrum 5's for less than $900, up to an Athena gruppo with the same wheelset for about $1,100.

As for 8 speed Campy, I have it on my Colnago Elegant and it is fantastic.

But we checked around today and all the 8 speed we saw was spendy when you add in wheelsets.

$650+ with a wheelset was the quote I have from a friend with a gruppo for sale.

Whatever you choose, I think silver would be my choice for that frameset.

Typical thrifty bill approach: I find a donor bike with a suitable group, buy it and do the swap. So the decision would be up to what I found. I have never bought a new group, nor pieced together one with individual component buys.

OK, I have been trying to piece together a Suntour Ole group, been at it for a couple of years, have about half of it. One Ole donor bike would have been a lot faster (and cheaper).... Ole stuff doesn't go that high, it just doesn't show up much.

I had to laugh, Bill, because you know your donor bike would be $50 with full Record...

OK, folks, you have spoken, here and in private.

The bike will be loaded with 8-sp Chorus (Ergo) and custom-built tubulars initially. The group is a proven performer for me, and the wheels, once I got Tufo S33 Pro's, are incredible-light, strong, precise. I'll look for a silver seatpost and already have the silver stem. I've not decided on Chorus calipers or C-Record Deltas, just to show them off.

At the same time, I'll be following the advice of several sages here on C&V, and putting together a 10-sp group in case I want to upgrade later. 10-sp Eurus wheels are great, but I'm not sure they are as good as the tubular set I have, and the idea of a sub-19lb bike kind of intrigues me. Besides, as Old Fat Guy told me..."having that 10-sp group means you're just a frame away from another bike. If opportunity knocks, you can open the door." Thanks also to those who sent me photos of SC's, as I was going to leave off the long seat tube decal/stripe until I saw it in the photos.

Part of it was ego. I can't build a prettier red/black bike than that Trek on the STI/Ergo thread, and I'd always feel inferior, for sure.

Now, if the bike looks like warmed-over dookie, I can blame you knuckleheads.

Got to admit, I don't find much Campy stuff here in thriftyland. When I do, its always vintage, usually a mixed set on a bike. The modern brifter bikes I find are always Shimano.

My only reservation about 8 speed is that it probably costs as much as 10 speed and finding replacement parts will probably become problematic in the long run if you intend to use the bike a lot.

The group has about 500 miles on it, and I bought it NIB a couple of years ago. I intend to wear it out, replace with 10 if/when that happens.

Have no fear.

8 speed is out there, but I'd never pay ebay prices.
