Expensive bike build....

Excluding the frameset lets build an expensive bike. The parts suggested need to relatively available and within the '75-early STI time frame. NO ICS stuff only because its to gaudy...NO NOS parts!!!

I'll start with pedals and freewheel and stem

Pedals: Assos $450
Freewheel: Campagnolo $325
Stem: Cinelli Grammo $150
Handlebar: Cinelli EXA $250
BB: EDCO $225
RD: 1st gen Super Record $260
FD: 4 hole Super Record $150
Seat: Brooks swallow titanium $480
Brake calipers: Campy Delta 5 pivot $500
Hubs: Campy Sheriff 5 star $500
Chain: Rohloff $60
Tires: Clement Seta NOS Because tires are disposable I'll let 'NOS' in $300
Toe straps: Red Hetchins $60
Spokes: Titanium $220

Running total: $3830

If someone can suggest a price for a kit I'll add it as a 'Ti bolt kit'

Bikes: 72 Cilo Pacer, 72 Gitane GT, 72 Peugeot PX10, 73 Speedwell Ti,l, 75 Peugeot PR-10L, 80 Colnago Super, 81 Zinn, 85 ALAN Cross, 85 De Rosa Pro, 86 Look 753, 86 Look KG86, 89 Parkpre Team, 90 Parkpre Team MTB, 90 Merlin

You may as well include a spare set of Campagnolo Ghibli disc wheels in case of a TT. Not sure of retail value for a NOS set. $2500-$3000 for a set? (This used rear sold for 750 pounds, or about $1200.)

If only those Paul RD's were older, they could make the cut.

Go with NOS first gen Super Record group. Makes 50th anniversary stuff look cheap.

Bikes: many

How about a 2nd release (all black) Mavic Seatpost.
NOS would be 150-250 depending on the size.
an Ideale 90 with aluminum rails and clamp would match nicely too at $400+
and the super record RD is nothing compared to some of the simplex Juy ones $1000+

Great , entertaining thread. Wish I could contribute ... but I just don't know enough.

Would it not be a fantastic coup for an artist among us to render the finished machine. It need not be too ambitious — say pen, ink, tempura acrylics, colored pencils — straight side-on view. Members get to vote on the frame set and the colors.

Brakes?
Cobalto

I personally never understood the infatuation some guys get over Deltas....

Wait, I think I get it: they were heavy, worked like crap, and cost a ton

Bikes: Two wheeled ones

Deltas also work better than Cobaltos/Campy record sidepulls.

Not in my experience. I have had both and the Deltas never worked as well. They were super finicky to set up, and even when they were, they didn't work noticeably better.

But they were heavy.

And expensive.

EDIT: Looks like NOS Deltas are going for more than NOS Cobaltos, at least on Ebay, so I will gracefully bow out of this suggestion.

Anyway, are we trying to build up an imaginary bike with bits that cost the most when they were new? Or with bits that are going for the most now? NOS Cobaltos are pretty expensive.

How about parts that have appreciated in value the most? I can think of a bunch of stuff that was not that desirable back in the day, that is demanding a hefty premium now.

I had a very good shop guy help me with them, and they outperform any of the single pivot brakes I have...they're CLOSE to dual pivot actually. They stop sufficiently where I'm not concerned about it at any rate.

My favorite braking is what Campy is doing now - with the dual pivot front and single rear.

Jim - why Chorus ti seatpost and not the record one?

The Dia Compe 450 centerpull's are quite pricey as well (anyone know why?).

Jim, I recently found this poor, neglected and mistreated Ideale Mod 90 at the local dump.

I had assumed, based on seeing various Mod 90s with a different right number, that this "9" was the year and would most likely be 1979. Was I all wrong on this?

Great thread BTW, can I suggest tires? D'Alessandro Pistard Seta tubulars. Currently on sale at $237, normally $300.

Sheriff star hubs are a little too new, but would be appropriate for an expensive build and still have some 70's flavor. Looks like a nice set ought to run you $500 or more.

I cant answer you on the '9' but I'll it there and add the tires...The build now has tubulars!!!

What are we missing?

Headset?
Spokes?
Rims?
Brake levers?
Clips and straps?
Bar tape?
Cables?
