I know I am a horrible person for saying this, and Mr. Clarke was inarguably a wonderfully talented author, but the caption for this photo looks it should be, "Highway 61 Hitch Hiker Strangler Arrested".

What movie?

It's Sri Lanka. Guys in shorts and flip-flops are quite common.

The futurist predictions of Sir Arthur were stunningly prescient, regarding satellites, computers, the worldwide web, mobile phones, etc. Deep in storage I have a first edition of his book, The Exploration of Space (1951), which was used by Wernher von Braun to convince JFK that it was possible to go to the moon.

In 1988, he was diagnosed with post-polio(myelitis) syndrome, and was usually in a wheelchair. My guess is the photo on the bike may have been taken before that.
