Anyone else watching HBO's entertaining series, Winning Time: the Rise of the Lakers Dynasty? Magic Johnson's first Lakers coach, Jack McKinney (played by Tracy Letts), loses the rear brake cable on his mid-level Schwinn and subsequently flies over the bars. :foo: I wonder if that's how he actually went down on his bike. It apparently brought an end to his tenure with the Lakers after getting them on the road to greatness.
That scene is at 2:23 in this clip: |

Terrible news, but I can't find any reports that he was on a bike.

This is a heartbreaking story in so very many ways. May his family find peace during this terrible time.

i think in the background, white cap, red-green jersey, green bike, may be "Bella" Lella Lombardi, until today only female driver to win an F1 championship point.

For sure Niki Lauda (Ermanno Cuoghi, Niki's head mechanic, is behind him) and James Hunt. Could possibly be Ronnie Peterson to Niki's right. Hard to tell about the rest since they're all looking for the starting signal. Brazilian Grand Prix, Interlagos, 1976.

I'm pretty sure that's Jacky Ickx. He's best rembered as a F1 driver for Ferrari (I saw him win at Mont-Tremblant in 1970, the year he finished 2nd in the Championship). However, his greatest success came in endurance racing, with six victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Being a Belgian sports personality of the early 1970s, he knew Merckx and reportedly the two often cycled together. |

I'm pretty sure this is the 1977 race. It's definitely Brazil, as the bicycles are Caloi, who was a Brazilian manufacturer. However, Hunt's bicycle is #1 and he didn't receive the #1 plate until after he became World Champion in 1976. Lauda's #11 assigment also corresponds to hts 1977 number assignment. That would make #9, Alex Ribeiro.
