In those early days of cycling, bikes and tricycles were an all purpose transport and sometimes were used to carry very heavy loads (much like we still see today in countries like India), and the bike supply industry wasn't stocked as granular as it is today. I guess most tires sold at that time were designed with not just a skinny guys as a rider in mind, but rather to take up to 200kg minimum. Of course, as my grandpa used to tell, they all were pretty bad and punctured often, that was just the way it was and no one expected it to be any other way.

Yeah they advertise up to 4 but they will build whatever you want, make it a break away if you want as well and I was talking about recently, last few decades anyway and current day as well.

If they put their faith in Gators that's good enough for me, I run them as well and have always had great luck with plenty of them.

Watched a bit of an old Billy Wilder film tonight. Sugar Cane bikes down a ramp in the last scene.

Meiffret's life story and record made him a celebrity. But who was driving the vacuum cleaner during his record run in 1962, Karl Kling?? (There's rare footage by British Pathe on YT.)

"José Meiffret (1913–1983, born Boulouris, France) was a cyclist who set a world motor-paced speed record of 204.73 km/h (127.243 mi/h) behind a Mercedes-Benz 300SL on the German Autobahn on July 19, 1962[1] at Freiburg Germany. This record was set on a bicycle setup with a 130-tooth chainring, weighing 20 kg and equipped with wooden rims."

So to what does the "186 km 625" refer?

The 625 is the decimal portion of the speed, i.e., 186.625 km/h. If you look at the French Wikipedia page for Meiffret, that's how the speeds are given (with a comma standing in for the decimal point, because French).

that bar on Ray's Sir Wally appears quite narrow, may even be less than the standard 38cm of the day...

I don't have a photo but I have an image burned into my mind.
Back in 2012, I was busting my butt to find a job in NYC. With my BA in photojournalism in-hand, and an impressive portfolio spanning my years as a combat photographer with the Navy up through freelance news-gathering and some student projects thrown in, the world was my oyster. Unfortunately, the media landscape was imploding and few were getting hired, as no newsrooms were expanding, only replacing reporters who had decided to move on. For the most part, the job market was rapidly contracting and there were few opportunities available.
Anyway, it was a nice, warm, late-spring day out and I was walking through SoHo after a third interview with NY1, feeling really good about how it went. I was walking on the sidewalk, with the goal of making my way towards the World Trade PATH station to get back to Jersey City where I was staying. I was about to step off the sidewalk, down the curb-cut and across a narrow alley to my right but was nearly hit when Will Arnett thought he had an opportunity to keep pedaling on the sidewalk towards me, at speed and also hitting the opposite alley curb-cut at the same time as I stepped off. He just didn't do a good enough job of vector management and I got slapped by his sportcoat, but survived otherwise unscathed. He yelled "sorry!" as he rode away. No great climax to the story, I just get annoyed at folks riding bicycles on sidewalks with pedestrian traffic there, this annoying rider happened to be a comedic actor whose work I admire.

Phil
