Alessandra Ambrosio seems to spend a lot of time on a bike. I wonder if she ever rode Ambrosio rims?

Here's British socialite Unity Mitford, cycling in Berlin just prior to World War II. She was infamous for being a Nazi supporter and reported mistress to Hitler in the late 1930s. She attempted suicide shortly after the start of the war by shooting herself in the head, with a pistol that Hitler had gifted to her for her own protection. Hitler allowed her to be taken back to England (with the inoperable bullet in her brain), where she recovered enough to learn to walk again, though she functioned mentally on the level of a 10 year old. One unconfirmed rumour is that after her return to England, she gave birth to Hitler's child, which was then put up for adoption. Unity and her family make for a fascinating story.

What happened to Roscoe Arbuckle was a crime.
These days, the vast majority of the public don't even know his name. The majority of those that do, only know him via the scandal. Still, there are a small but dedicated few who regulalry acknowledge and celebrate his comedic genius and keep his memory alive. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...db2a9586a4.jpg |

Surprising there's not a feature film about her.
It would be nice to see celebrity refugees of the nazis on bikes: https://m.imdb.com/list/ls052210553/ Personally, I happen to admire Fritz Lang for all he did in film, pre-war, to bring attention to the rising tide in Germany. Yes, I'm a big fan of Lang's too, having most of his silent, expressionist films. That's an interesting list but my initial reaction was that it was too broad. I know that some of those actors were in the USA well prior to 1928 and others that were working in Europe, apparently quite happily, before they were poached by USA film makers. I started researching some of the others and wouldn't classify them all as fleeing the Nazis. Regardless, I believe I've posted bicycle related pictures of a few of them previously, particularly Lamarr and Dietrich. They should be on my PC, so I'll try to find them and re-post for you. |

Really- I just know of the scandal. I know that he eventually got back into film- with but more as an ensemble member. But the scandal ruined his career and his life. Old Hollywood fascinates me.
He made a short series of 2 reel comedy films about a decade after the scandal. They were successful enough that he was offered and signed a contract to star in a feature film, which would have been his big triumphant return. After signing the contract he went out to celebrate (it was also his wedding anniversary). During the celebrations, he was reported as having said something to the effect of, "This is the happiest day of my life". Afterwards, he went home, got into bed and died in his sleep. At least for the last few hours of his life, he had finally found true happiness again. Sounds like a Hollywood script, doesn't it? |
For SurferRosa, Austrian born actress Hedy Lamarr, who fled Austria in 1937 to get away from her over-controlling husband, a wealthy munitions manufacturer who was supplying Hitler and Mussolini. She went to Paris, then London, where Louis B. Mayer signed her to MGM. She was also inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame for co-inventing a non-jammable, frequency hopping device for radio contolled torpedoes during WWII.

For SurferRosa , German born actress Marlene Dietrich. In 1929 Parmount director Joseph von Sternbeg was sent to Germany to make The Blue Angel at UFA. He cast Dietrich in the female lead and the two began an affair. Upon completion of the film, von Sternberg returned to the USA and Dietrich followed shortly thereafter, being signed to a Paramount contract, based on her performance in The Blue Abgel. Dietrich and von Sternberg would make six films together over the next five years but their their off-screen relationship would also result in a 1932 divorce for von Sternberg.

I have never heard of this, that is very interesting for an armchair military historian. I'm more of a three legged short stool historian myself, but it stands as interesting.

The late Nicky Hayden, American world champion motorcycle racer. He put his earbuds in and went on a bike ride. He rode through a stop sign and rolled out in front of a car. :(

In 1959 British racer car driver Stirling Moss was involved in a traffic accident. Ruled at fault, he lost his UK driving privileges for one year. What to do? Buy a bicycle, of course!
