Looking at a Trek 700 frame, year unknown...

I've been looking for hybrid to turn into a cross/touring/commuter bike with gears, and came across this today for $50. I don't know what year it is, but guessing from the color, perhaps mid-late 90's.

Anyone familiar with these, and have any input on the geometry & quality? I would probably run something like a Nitto Northroad bar (my personal favorite). Size looks like it could work, I'm 6'1" with a short torso.

I suspect it to be closer to mid '90s but no big deal. Just be sure it has a full ChroMoly frame and fork.

From the little I've found, it may have a Hi-Ten fork, but so does my beloved Miyata 610 (not the loaded touring 610).

Sounds like a fair deal, but it might be too small for you. And it won't be light weight.

You might want to hold out for a purpose-built touring or road frame.

i agree with the too small assessment. i'm 5' 8" and by looking at the length of the headtube i'm thinking it's just about right for me. but then again, i've been a supporter of those who think that frame size is overrated and it's importance is largely a matter of aesthetics rather than function in many cases. and for 50 bucks you can afford to take a chance if you want to IMO.

Perhaps you're right... I usually ride a 58cm top tube, but the head tube looks short on this which would probably make for a more hunched over ride than I'm used to on my Miyata or Nishiki, which are 63x58 and 62x57, respectively (as I recall).

At least 94 judging by the cranks and at most 96 judging by brakes.

That looks like a 95/96 700. Bear in mind, the 700 has a Cr-Mb fork, and seat tube, the rest is high-ten steel. 700 is lowest of the 7xx series.
If that was $50 for a complete bike, I'd say it's a good deal. But I'd pass. Also, it looks a bit small for you. I'd guestimate that's a 21" model. You need at least the 23" offering.

Here's a ladies '95 MultiTrack 730 that I have almost finished. True Temper/Trek cromoly frame, fork, and stays. Bonus front low rider rack mounts. The 730-750 series takes a big step up from the 700-720 in both frame quality and components. I think these older Treks are a great value and are often overlooked and under appreciated.

Older hybrids tend to sell cheap. I would look for a complete bike instead.

Thanks, those are garden variety Shimano 7 speed thumb shifters. They can be had for cheap on ebay and function quite well with the older Shimano drivetrain.

Good Deal but if your 6 foot this frame is too small for some reason frames tend to look bigger than they actually are when half naked built up to less experienced buyers.
