with a one overplayed track exception, the unforgettable fire is a great album. feels fresh every time i listen. broad, atmospheric, i love it. i saw them in birmingham once, with mick jones (the clash) and his b.a.d. band opening up for them. it was euphoric, but that was way back in the day.

now playing: joy division, unknown pleasures

Bikes: blue ones.

No way I can listen that album and do something else again that day. But it's great.

Thank you political scientist Bono. How profound.

Bono, Sting and Michael Stipe all follow what I call the mumbles rule....when they mumble, and the vocals are covered by the music, the bands are ok. The minute they try to actually sing...good lord, change the channel. Joshua Tree is still one of the most repetitive, dull albums I've ever heard.

The difference being that Beyonce is writing top 40 pop...and it's good at being mindless top 40 pop. She has no delusions or aspirations of writing significant, important music. It's fun, dumb and my wife and I can both enjoy it. U2 is not good at trying to be The Clash. Not everyone is Bob Dylan...nor should they try to be.

That Beyonce songs is 1000 x better than "She Wore Lemon". Obviously this is all subjective.

They haven't been any good since they made that album "a rush of blood to the head". But at least bono is doing that Paltrow woman.

I like the U2.

Saw them in a dump called Headliners in 1982. Me with my fake ID and loving every minute of it.

Unforgettable Fire is a great album. One is a great song. And i don't think any member of U2 thinks Lemon should be taken seriously. I don't know why anyone else would.

That said, for U2 bashing, Achtung Baby was OK, everything after that has enhanced vocals (Bono's voice is horrible live) and offers only the occasional hook. They should have retired 20 years ago. But then again, even more pathetic than U2 are the Stones. They should have retired 40 years ago.

When U2 writes anything that approaches the ferocity of Gimmee Shelter, let me know. When U2 performs a single song that compares to Paint it Black...please let me know. The Stones might not have been relevant for 20 years, but they had a stretch of being one of, if not the, greatest rock bands in the world. U2 wasn't the best rock band on half of their tours with U2.

Disclaimer - any argument about music is inherently subjective.

In no way do i relate to the Stones. The music is dated. I hear it and it screams 1967. It is meaningless to me. At least the Beatles made songs that sound as fresh today as they did in the day.

Also, in no way can Keith Richards hold a candle to Edge when creating a feeling from a guitar. The only thing going for Richards is that he found the elixir of life as he should have been dead 40 years ago. Not to say the drugs hasn't made him completely addle-minded.

Ha! I just bought that last night at Half Price Books. I kind of like it. (It's my first U2 album I think.)

the greatest british blues band should have retired immediately after their best studio work, exile on main st.? that's akin to asking james dean to retire after shooting east of eden. i will admit they probably didn't approach the greatness of tattoo you (1981) since its release. but how do you improve on keith's track little t&a? you don't. saw them also in b'ham on the steel wheels tour. no, it wasn't beggar's banquet or let it bleed, but it was fun as hell. exciting even.

now playing: "she's my little rock n roll! ah ah hah ahhh!"

Milan

Middle guy's drinking wine from a sippy box. Check out the marble trim around the door, and the handle.
That building is probably older than the US.

I'm not a fan of U2, but every Irish Catholic college chick I ever met thought Bono set the sun.
Maybe that's what annoyed me.

What interests me these days is the grip a group has on the song, the discipline.
I'm not sure that's completely obtainable when they dub their parts separately.

I prefer to think of Pete Townsend screaming "again!" until, battered and bloody, they nail it.
Then they go home, not speaking to one another, but exhilirated nonetheless.

Jeeps, derailing my own thread, caught up in it.

I really need to visit Milan.

And I hope my hearing aid still works well enough for me to still enjoy "The Electric Company" by - you guessed it - U2.

I don't know Robbie. Your first one made me laugh out loud.
I had been thinking those guys looked like retired Cosa Nostra dudes who've been told by their doctors to get more exercise.

as a young lad, his school chums gave him a latin nickname, similar to 'good voice.' the first part of it stuck.

so the five cyclists in the photo look like the four musicians in u2 because they're old and wearing sunglasses? right...

you know nixon had a big problem with philanthropists too. ever seen hisenemies list?

god, i've found myself arguing for u2?? wtf?!
