As promised, here are a few pics of the extras. BTW, I did let the seller know I didn't feel right taking all this stuff - I had thought it was just the couple of extra freewheels and a couple chainrings as he'd emailed me about. Then he came out with this big box! When he told me that if I didn't pack it off with me he'd just end up tossing it all in the trash, I thought of you guys/gals :)

Yes, there are some things in there that are either going to be given away to someone that needs/asks for it, others (like the crankset, tools and a couple pairs of toe straps) I will keep to use and the rest will go into the BOC - I'm only four more deliveries away from receiving it myself!

One pair of red toe straps is already spoken for.

If you are interested in the details, please feel free to check out my Flickr - there are notes on everything in the first photo below.

Cool tools:

I just spent a couple hours (battery-charging time) cleaning up a lot of the surface rust and generally giving the frame a once over with some Scratch-X wax. I also pulled the BB - a nice and clean interior to the shell, and no pins that I could see. She does have some interior rust, but what the hey - she's 43 years old and I didn't expect her underpinnings to be perfect :)

Moar pix tomorrow!

Just finished rebuilding the 1930's era fire station into a Special Ops first responder building. See your new guys marching to class and back to noon chow every day when we were there. I got my first job as the Site Quality / Civil Engineer at Corry Station. Fun to watch the Blues practice every Tuesday and Wednesday form there, too.

Sounds like you're doing a super job supporting my new Sailors out there by giving them some modern structures to learn in; back in my day, welll....

DG has changed a little bit over the past 24 years or so ;) I think it might be the women running scared these days (I won't say a word about the donkeys)! But seriously, a cycling, fishing and suntanning paradise; I'm very glad I get this chance to return one more time before I retire.

BTW, how long were you in the MC? What rank/MOS?

Beautiful. While I have none that precede the 198* pedigree (and none Italian, though G. Marinoni did apprentice with Mario Rossin in Milan in the 60s), I must admit my admiration for the particular elegance of the 60s and early 70s Italians. That one you snagged is something different, and a very special find, even if not so wild a departure as to justify the initial guesses of most of us folks on the forum here...

I at least got the town of origin right when I guessed that you might've picked up a pre-'74 Cinelli, eh?

You were close on the Cinelli guess - I'm thinking you went that direction since I said this had a headbadge - but recall that I was not overly impressed with my own SC. Perhaps the older ones were done in the same vein as the Masi; if so, I'd give Cino another shot.

SJI is definitely out-of-the-way - but in a very, very good way! In fact, I will finally get to take an entire week off towards the end of July/first week of August and I'll be heading out there with my loaded Mondia for a couple days of solo camping. I'm thinking Orcas Island and Mount Constitution, but of course can hop onto a ferry from any island and visit another within an hour.

How's the riding in Montreal?

BTW, the goods are in the mail.

Thanks, Alex :)

Alex is sending me a Campy NR headset with the early <C> marking, which I am pretty sure is correct for this vintage. Solves a problem right away, because the current headset is actually quite rough.

Moar pix tomorrow, dude :)

Thank you :)

Actually, most are racing bikes, although I do have the Mondia touring rig. I like 'em fast and light!

Thanks, Andy - and I have already solved the front derailleur and headset issues. I took the only early Campy clamp body I had and fitted a pre-CPSC cage/arms to it - works great! Not 100% PC, but no big deal. And shnibop came through with a <C> stamped early NR headset!

RD is pretty much okay, but remember I said the PO did a little drillium? Well, he actually did a bit more than the back plate. Pics tomorrow; I've got to clean a lot of years worth of road grime off this unit so that the pics will tell the story.

Research: that's going to be fun, particularly as the PO stated he bought the frame in 1969 - but the band decal on the seat tube reads "Campione Del Mondo 1967-68 - 1968-69". Produced after the World Championship but before the end of '69?

BTW, the chainstays are almost flat - they are probably the most striking bit of pipe-work on this frame. Really, really cool :)

Given the scarcity of the early, integral cable stop front derailleurs and no-date rears, I personally think an early Nuovo Record flat cage front would go fine on that bike. But you may want period correct and of course, as a public servant, we know you have deep pockets. ;)

Thanks, Scott :)

I hope they're still speculating as to the "who". I know a few people over on CR and they might try to make me an offer I can't refuse. I'm going to keep and ride this, so I don't need any distracting numbers tossed my way :)

I think the only thing I really need to bring this to PC is the Campy brake set - with the modification Otis suggested. For now, I'll simply put the brakes on as-is and modify them at a later date.

Deep pockets, huh? Let me tell you, nobody but officers join the Armed Forces to get rich ;)

Loving the bike and the vintage tools are the icing on the cake

rootboy 07-12-12 05:36 AM

Great stash of extras. That 151 crank set original to the bike? What a score, although I've found that finding suitable small rings for them can be a challenge. "Small" being a relative term of course. My Frejus came with 51/54 up front. I did find a 47 a while ago, which helped these old legs some, and then found a 45 not too long ago, which isn't in the greatest of shape. But every little bit helps. But that shouldn't be a problem for your stout "sea legs" D. Dude. ;)

Must be from the PO's kickstand. A Confente-designed kickstand, of course.

DD,
I was in the Corps from Jan 1976 through Aug 1977, honorably medically discharged when I developed asthma. I was an avionics tech in training when I was sent home by the flight surgeons. Worst day of my life when I got the discharge, Marines were going to by my career for life. Proud to be able to build your guys facilities Senior Chief, right now the Navy is not building much at all with the budget cuts coming down. things will be back to abnormal soon, we are in the re-qualifying phase for a special ready builder program we have been in for 12 years, now.

Best of luck in DG and take care while you are there. I'll have you in my prayers while you deploy.

Well in that case, I've got a nice Sturmey-Archer FW 4-speed hub that I'd be willing to donate to the cause! Does the bicycle have brazen on derailleur stops that might need to be ground off.

Yup - he'd replaced it with a matching pair of 144s (1973) to get better range on the small rings. Currently it is set up with an old-school half-step gearing; it's a 50/47. Yikes!

I'll save the 151 - after I clean it up a little - for possible show, but I'll have to run the 144s in practise because my knees are not what they used to be and they sure aren't getting any younger :)

Ha ha!

Seriously, though - they really are very elegantly done; completely unique from anything else I have. Less than 1/2" in width in the vertical plane; I bet that's why she was so solidly planted on the couple steep and short climbs I took her up on my test ride.

DD, this is going to be an awesome build. I agree that this is not so different from the rest of your stable (well, the Davidson is something different), but it may turn out to be my personal favorite. Quite a score!

Bill, it's like they say: once a Marine, always a Marine. Thanks for your service, Brother :)

Money - don't tell me! Budgetary issues seem to be all-consuming here (even in support of Naval Air Forces!) in the past year. It's insane - and it absolutely has to get better or stuff is going to get turned off. You know what I mean...

I can hardly wait to head off for DG - going to have a ball!

You need one of those seaplanes that are so ubiquitous in your area. I took a vacation on Pender Island, not too far from you, and the seaplane to the island was one of the trip's highlights. You're fortunate to live is such a beautiful area.

Drillium Dude 07-12-12 02:04 PM

Another nice bonus was the fact that the PO had updated the chain - seems to be a 6/7 speed HyperGlide. I cleaned it a little, added a couple of the spare links and installed it on the Mondia last night. Instant drivetrain transformation! I had a really old, fat and wide Regina on there that was just pathetic, really. Loud and imprecise all across the gears, this was a welcome fix.

Good thing, too, since I plan on taking that rig for a couple days of touring/camping in the San Juans in a few weeks.

A very nice Masi Special in Champagne.

due ruote 07-12-12 02:23 PM

DD, to me what's different about this bike is that you may have to live with a bit of patina. All your other bikes are so...perfect. This one is too, but in a completely different way.

DG looks like a perfect place for a cheap FG. With a basket for your mask and snorkel. Be safe.

No kidding, huh? I watched a Cessna 180 float plane land just a few minutes after the ferry had arrived at Friday Harbor on the day of pickup. Funny enough, I was also looking through a local real estate guide on the return trip and noted a house for sale for under 250k on its own tiny island in the same vicinity. The catch, of course, is that there's only one way in: private plane on the island's small airstrip.

Still, that's the safest bet for the upcoming zombie apocalypse ;)

Very true - this has much more going on patina-wise than anything else, however, I did begin moving in this direction by scoring the Spinella/Olympia a year ago. That one had its fair share of chips/surface rust I had to touch up.

Going to be difficult, but not impossible, to match the champagne color on the Masi.

It is at that - perfectly flat, although there's a cool network of jungle singletrack for MTB riding as well. I can pick up an MTB cheap from someone transferring off the island, so I won't be shopping for one before I go. However, I will need to get a new fins/snorkel/mask set before I go. Snorkeling there is the shiz-nit :)

Love those VAR tools.

Drillium Dude 07-12-12 08:31 PM

I stripped her all the way down the night of the 10th, then spent some time last night removing the lightest of the surface rust and buffing out the surface scratches/scrapes. Looks better, but a lot of the patina remains - particularly the rust spots around the areas where components were clamped to the frame. Now I know why I'm such a fan of braze-on this and that :)

Anyhow, here are some close-ups out in the light of day - enjoy!
