Trek 614 cable routing question
I have what I believe to be a 1981 Trek 614, BB serial# 004145. It has top-tube braze-ons for the rear brake. So now I'm seeing other 1981 Trek 614's with top-tube cable clamps for the rear brake. This ebay offering for one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-1981...item519f40e143, and others on google.
So am I mistaken, are they mistaken, or did Trek produce 614's with and without top-tube braze-ons in 1981? Maybe my bike is a different year?
cheers, thanks
Joe

Bikes: 1980 Masi, 1984 Mondonico, 1984 Trek 610, 1980 Woodrup Giro, 2005 Mondonico Futura Leggera ELOS, 1967 PX10E, 1971 Peugeot UO-8
Chances are, but I can't say for sure, the ones without are actually earlier than the ones with. If you want to check year, get the seller to read off the serial numbers and look it up on www.vintage-trek.com. Then check the brochures on that site and see if they indicate top tube braze-ons.
Your frame is listed as a 1981 610 22". The 1981 does not identify brazed-on details.

OK, I've figured out the vintagetrek info, and my bike keys out as a 1981 22" 610 frame (which would become a 614 with the right parts). So what's with the frames with cable-clamps rather than braze-ons? Curious about these old Treks.

I just picked up what I believe to be a 1981 614 last week also. Serial number is 0015XX. It has the braze-ons along the top tube also. It has a mix of parts, but has the SR Laprade seatpost which I'm using to ID it as a 614.
I would tend to agree that the ones with the cable clamps are earlier models also. The 614 on ebay has the serial number listed as #N3E9C15, which puts the frame bulld as a 1979 I believe.

I have '79 514 which has braze on TT cable guides (unlike the ebay bike), and an '82 614 which also has them. In the 1970's, Trek was much more likely to add/delete brase-ons for racks, bottle holders, etc, so it is possible that they were omitted for this bike. John Thompson worked there for a number of years in the 80's, but this bike may preceed him. Never-the-less, he may have better insight.

I have a 78/79 736 without top tube cable braze ons.
