My "new" commuter.
Well, I picked up this 1976 Raleigh Grand Prix at a pawn shop after watching it for about two months. They were asking to much for it so I had a feeling it would sit till I could talk them into a real price. It is in excellent shape and it only needed tires, a cotter, clips and straps, and a good overhaul to clean it up and grease it up. It really only needed to be wiped down, there was no rust anywhere on this thing and of course new grease. As this is going to be my commuter future plans include a rack, pump, bottle cage, and shinny fenders.

That's one clean Grand Prix man! So what kinda fenders/rack are you going with? Oh and you mean like a chrome frame pump for pegs?

I have not started shopping for fenders yet.............open to suggestions. Rack will most likely just be an old aluminum Blackburn I have banging around.........will always be hidden by panniers, most of the time. Yes, I would love to pick up a chrome frame pump but there are no pegs on the frame so I may just use a slightly more modern frame pump I have, it is aluminum so it won't be perfect but it will be ok I think. I will always be looking for those perfect pieces to finish this out though.
Thanks for the kind words.........I love this bike...........I need to start looking for vintage bags too.
Oh yeah, I need a "R" nut for the one cotter...........all the rest are still there.

I have a very soft spot for Raleigh's in my heart, so hard not appreciated your bike! And I totally understand with alum pump, all I ask is please don't buy plastic fenders.

Great looking GP there, fixed13! Many people make the mistake of grossly underrating these bikes: They are superb-riding mid-level bikes if you invest just a little on upgrades. - And you're part-way there already, with those Huret derailleurs. I especially like the Huret Challenger like yours - they are very good changers IMO.
I don't know why Raleigh Sport advises against plastic fenders - personal preference perhaps, but I installed a set of Planet Bikes on my Gr Jubilee, and was quite impressed with them. I think these shiny-black fenders would be an excellent choice for your bike too. They are inexpensive, and extremely durable and quiet.
The one other mod I would do is to replace those steel rims with aluminum rims... Sun CR18's or (hooked) Araya A3's would be a good choice. You will also appreciate the improvement you'll get with a new pair of Pasela tires.

Looks like it's never been ridden. How much work was it to clean it so well?
Those derailleurs never got good press, but they're surprisingly good.

Check out the fluted Zeppelin fenders from VO:

If they fit the fork, you will never have clearance issues with them, trust me.

My "new" commuter.
Again, thanks for all the kind words. My intentions for fenders are chrome, I have a set of PB black plastic ones that I am not happy with the look of on this particular bike.
As far as cleaning goes, it was not as bad as some of the old three speeds I have done. Mostly just accumulated dirt, not much dried grease and no rust. I regreased everything but I did not do a complete tear down like I would normally do because I was impatient and I wanted to keep the cables for now. Frankly it was in such good shape that it did not need it.

At some point I will probably replace the rims as suggested.

I know I will catch some grief for this but they were sitting in front of me and they were talking rain for my ride in to work this morning soooooo...................It has black plastic fenders till I can get some shiny metal ones. I think I may go with the hammered ones from VO. I have added my commuting/touring essentials with the exception of my panniers (hide to much in the pictures and they are hanging to dry). I will be looking for vintage stuff to replace the newer stuff so it looks more appropriate as time goes by.

Wow! Those looks a lot better on there then I would have suspected, perhaps black instead of hammered and preserve that look?

Ok, those fenders look cool but I read a review on them and apparently they don't do much good, to narrow. Look great but I need function too.
