I had MKS Sylvan touring on my urban bike, but with rubber soled shoes, they would get slippery in the wet. If you aren't using toe clips, they are not good in the wet. The aluminum tread isn't exactly sharp. I prefer the MKS 3000 rubber tread pedals. They grip rubber soled shoes well dry or wet.

Was anybody else surprised by how heavy a pair of MKS Sylvans actually are? Not saying they're not nice!

Thanks for the reference to the MKS "Berthet" pedals!

When I got my first pair of 105s in 1990 or so I could really feel that back cage but now I don't even notice it, even with Chucks on. I feel the pedal offers a lot more support to flexy thin soles than say the Sylvan.
Running shoes are the best in the 105s, though. A little strap pressure will press the back cage into the sole a bit and kinda lock my shoe in without creating hot spots on my feet and the soles are thick enough I can't feel the back cage in my foot with the strap cinched a bit.

i like the vo platform pedals for looks, comfort and weight. i have bought both the $50 touring pedal (a little cheaper from univeral cycles) and its less expensive city pedal design (much cheaper from outside outfitters). if you have a wide foot, splurge for the touring pedal, else the city pedal might suffice. they look great, and if they're replacing 40 year old heavy rat traps, you'll immediately feel an improved difference in speed and feel.
