unassembled NOS '73 paramount on ebay

Interesting look at a pre-assembled paramount. Looks like it had stem shifters?

I'm thinking bar end shifters judging by the amount of cable above the downtube stops. I can just about guarantee that it didn't have stem shifters.

Bikes: Was Fuji and got my grails (Pro, Pro SR, Design Series, & Ti). Now I hunt 50's/60's road bikes.

Did companies typically ship bikes with the chain installed?

Edit: Ah, I see. I don't think it is NOS. The seller doesn't even seem to advertise it that way. Still, it is probably as close as anyone is likely to find.

I dunno... The listing does say Condition: New: A brand-new, unused, unopened, undamaged item in its original packaging (where packaging is applicable). Packaging should be the same as what is found in a retail store, unless the item is handmade or was packaged by the manufacturer in non-retail packaging, such as an unprinted box or plastic bag. See the seller's listing for full details.

Sounds like NOS to me. I also think it probably has bar end shifters based on ther cable lengths, but stem shifters were a factory option on the '73 P13-9.

I thought it odd that the seller could not identify the shifters, surely they are marked campy or schwinn. Maybe they are packaged up and as yet unseen?

Because they're wrapped up in brown butcher paper on the top tube?

I think bidding might go as high as $2500, but there's no telling what the seller's reserve is; he may think it's worth something crazy like $10k.

My policy is never to bid on items with a "secret" reserve.

I have a question about the decals on this;

Isn't it suppose to have olympic rings on it?

I believe 72 was the last year of that style seat tube decal. My 72 came with stem shifters, but it was the 15-speed touring model. That appears to be the race version.

Very early '73 model year Paramounts had the Olympic Rings seat tube decal, but in January or February of '73 Schwinn went to just the two World Championship bands on the seat tube.

That's quite a find. I would think the final price might be lowered since the seller won't ship, local pickups only.

I guess I learned something. I can't imagine stem shifters on a Paramount.

I can't believe the seatpost is installed pushed all the way in, they must be confident that tube is clean clean clean!

Sounds like someone here need to find a local to ship it to them. Pick up only seems to be a great way to pick up items at a lower price. I know I usually ignore auctions if they have pickup only and it's not within driving distance.

It will certainly go for lots of money as it will be most likely be bought by another speculator that will keep it unassembled and just stare at it with dollar signs in his eyes for the next 20/30+ years like the present owner must have done........
Poor bike deserves better!.....

He's in Sonoma County just north of me. I'd be willing to facilitate on this one.

Why did you have to go and say that!
I was already to say, "oh well"!

I may now have to bid.
