Help ID this Schwinn Cruiser

Picked this up today to make into a leisure bike. The serial number is under the pedals and reads LY802270. Does anyone have a guess as to when this bike was mfg or where? Thanks for any info. I managed to get the tires aired up and everything oiled and it is a really smooth riding old Cruiser I just wish I knew more about it. Thanks for any help.

Late eigties cantilever frame Cruiser. Check the head badge for four very lightly stamped digits. This is the assembly date code. The first three digits are the day of the year (001-366), and the fourth digit is the last digit of the year. My guess is that it's a 1988 model year bike, perhaps made in late 1987.

Here is the 1989 Cruiser catalog page.

I don't know for sure, but I think it's a pretty safe bet it's Chinese.

It's cleaning and oiling nicely. Have to do something about the fenders. Either gonna order some new repops or sand and paint these black.

How do I tell if this is a "Greenville" Schwinn or not? I can't find a serial number similar to mine anywhere online. LY802270

Looking back on that catalog pic I can't believe I didn't pay more attention to the blonde model behind me. Either way that's a really cool cruiser regardless of year or origin. I would bet it's from the 80s though, due to the type of fork... other than that I have nothing... sorry.

That is surely and 80's era blonde model! I remember when girls looked like her....and Traci Lords I miss those days.

Schwinn didn't make any cantilever frame cruisers in the U.S. after the Chicago factory closed its doors in late 1983. The Greenville plant never made these frames.

I'll ask again, is there a small font, lightly stamped four digit number stamped into the head badge, and if so, what is it? Is there a number stamped into the driveside rear dropout?

In the mid-eighties, Ed Schwinn paid $2 million for a third share of China Bicycles (founded by Jerome Sze) in Shenzhen, mainland China. By 1987, China Bicycles was supplying a substantial percentage of Schwinn's units. Also, in the late eighties, Schwinn paid nearly a million dollars for a 41.5% stake of Csepel, a Hungarian bicycle manufacturer, and imported about 63,000 units from Csepel in 1990 and 1991, but I'm pretty certain your bike was made before that.

I think - based on eliminating other sources - that your bike was made by China Bicycles, but as I said in my earlier post, I'm not certain of that.

t.
yes the number on the Head Badge is 3248 and it is the old oval size badge. No number at all on the dropout.

Got a new Schwinn seat and replaced the ugly handgrips with a more vintage looking set. Plan to get the wheels and tires cleaned up next weekend.
