Does this look right to you?

I'm looking for a tight-ratio 6-speed freewheel for the Mondia for use on the flats of Diego Garcia. I found this the other day on you-know-where, and it's priced fairly enough for me. But! I am wondering what's going on with the photo below:

It appears to me that there's an awful lot of exposed thread. All of my 5 and 6 speed units have no exposed thread whatsoever. Is it possible the seller simply added another cog to a 5-speed body here? If so, has anyone ever tried this? I don't need this failing on me while out in the middle of the IO

I queried the seller two days ago and so far haven't gotten an answer back.

Thanks!

The body is the close ratio version of the basic original design with the spline removal engagement. The small cog appears to have the same progression center to center of the others, I would not worry about it.

I thought perhaps that was it, but the seller doesn't have any pics of the box (which, if it's original to this unit, should show the tooth-count). I guess what I'm ultimately saying is that I'd be more comfortable if the threaded flange of the outermost cog was deeper, coming down nearly flush with the inner body.

judging from the photo, I would say the small cog is not screwed in all the way. It looks like the gap is pretty big there.

Edit: in other words I disagree that the distance between the cogs looks the same. Granted, it is hard to judge from the angle of the photo, but the amount of thread in there is almost as side as the cog itself. No way that is screwed on all the way. I would snag it, probably just needs to be screwed on.

I may also have a close ratio regina, but I have to double check before I can be sure.

I've got a Maillard Course 13-18 corncob, PM me if you want it. I don't think that cog is screwed on all the way, and I don't think it can be screwed on any further. I agree, I think someone just tried to add an extra cog to a 5-speed body.

If none of these kind folks can make it work for you Jeff, I've got a couple of DA 6-speed corncobs in really nice shape.

I'll keep an eye out on this thread, and if you do find one during your double-check, I'll PM for details.

BTW, I only have a splined removal tool - and new rings/chain - so I'm needing something with the splined body and minimal wear. But I'll pay good money

Thanks, Captain - does the Maillard take a special removal tool? I'm trying to stick with Regina only because I have the correct removal tool for the splined-type body. I converted all mine over as I had two-prongs fail on me a couple of times...

Thank you - we'll see what comes from the posts and PMs. I really do think that the Ebay unit is iffy and won't support what I need "in the field"

I have at least one cluster (Maillard, I think) that looks just like that one. I don't think the exposed threads mean a thing. Mine is on a tandem and works just fine.

At that time, all Regina freewheels were 5 speed bodies. The 6th cog was screwed into a special 5th cog, I forget the position name, it came a few ways, with straight threading for a 15t small, and various reductions for a 14, 13. Later redesigned for a 12t small or "top" cog. I forgot the position numbers and annotations as finding a regina freewheel service board stocked today is fruitless. Every once in a while a swath of old Reginal cogs comes up on ebay and sells for silly amounts.

Thanks for all the replies, either providing information or offering FWs of the type I'm looking for. Once again, the C&V crowd comes through phenomenally!

I have PM contact with two members and am currently pursuing deals with both; a spare would probably be a good idea once I'm out in the middle of nowhere

Also, for those interested, I'll be listing a few freebies in the FSOT thread in the coming week. I have a few items to pass along in addition to some stuff that will go to local C&Vers in preparation for my pack-out/move.

Just to help with the threads, even if all these generous offers come through. Maybe the seller has not threaded the top cog into the 2nd cog enough? Maybe it is the wrong top cog? Or even the wrong 2nd cog. It's hard to tell and we can't tell which model Regina we are looking at. As a comparison I offer:

But look at this 6 speed splined next to a 5 speed notched.

A CX:

An Regina America body.

I have a near identical 6 speed set-up on a 5 speed Regina Oro block. While there are some exposed threads between the body and the spacer flange on the 6th cog, it appears to be much less than that in the submitted photo. In opinion, the subject freewheel has a position 6 cog that isn't sully seated. There does seem to be a larger than normal spacing between the 5th and 6th cogs. Hopefullly, the seller did not cross thread it and damage the threads in the process. BTW, mine is 12-13-14-15-17-19T.

Which makes me wonder, T-mar, why isn't that 6th cog all the way in? If it were OK, why post of a pic like that? You may be right about something not being right with that freewheel.

Bikes: Several, mostly not name brands.

Those Regina bodies were actually designed for a 4-cog block; additional cogs were cobbled onto the design by threading the inside of the final cogs. As long as the cog-to-cog spacing is even (and it looks to be), it should be fine.

More great info

So, it seems that the FW in question is normal, but I agree that the last cog looks as though it can be snugged down a little further - there does appear to be a little bit more of a gap between that cog and the rest. Thanks for the additional input, guys - in particular pastorbob and T-mar for the super photographic assistance.

While I'm getting hooked up right now with roadrunner2012 and VolvoJP for a couple of CX-CXS units, I might just pull the trigger on the subject Oro as well. One can never have too many drivetrain parts in the spares bin, you know?

Thanks again to all!

Completed one freewheel transaction with VolvoJP - thanks, John! This will do nicely

And the spare is now on it's way, too. Between them, I should easily get through 365 days in the Indian Ocean!

Again, thanks to all for the info and the offers; C&V comes through once again.

Spare CX-S arrived from the Ebay seller today. I put it on immediately after coming home from work; you know it's the end of a good day when the old freewheel comes right off and the new one is so tight after overhaul it purrs almost soundlessly

One more CX-S on the way from the GWN; it's probably overkill, but in addition to two spare freewheels I also have three extra sets of tires, 16 spare tubes, two spare sets of pedals and a spare saddle.

Well, the place I'm going is in the middle of nowhere - can't be too careful, right?
