Packed like sardines...

N + 1 definitely creates some interesting storage issues for the square footage challenged... here we have 8 full bikes neatly packed within a standard double closet space! 3 more bikes banished to the garage and a few others in storage at friends. time for a bigger place i think. these machines definitely need a little more room to breathe!

While in the closet getting a bike, do you pick a jersey to match?

More importantly, who in the world has a free closet available to store bikes?

I agree. But the OP is wasting alot of space and needs to go vertical.

I am sure most have seen my rack but here it is again. It holds 11-12 (or as many as you need depending on length and density) and is freestanding.

Depending on the height and strength of the clothing rod you could even rig something up with a length of string about 10" long with a loop on each end. Place one loop on the valve stem run it over the rod and hook the other loop on the valve. It is a bit more cumbersome then a solid hook but get the job done.

Great bunch of bikes, but I think BG has the right idea. Saves having to move 3 bikes to get to the one you want, and uses the space better. You'll even have room for shoes.

i did vertical in my previous abode... placing one bike with both wheels on front wheel up, next to one bike with front wheel off and rear wheel up. it was definitely much more efficient and easy to grab any bike and go.

bianchi, can you measure your set up and see how much space it takes for two bikes? with my old system it still took about 26" for two bikes. as my closet sits, each opening is only 58" lengthwise. so at that rate, i'm still only 4 and 4 on each side max and short of any useable white space. the benefit of the way i have it pictured is that i can stagger the back two bikes so that they are pretty much leaning crank to crank. i suppose i can go vertical this way, but it would mean staggering hooks and i doubt i would have the vertical space for staggering it like that. as it is, the hanger pole would have to go if i wanted to go vertical. as pictured, the depth for the 4 bikes is 34.5"... there's just no way i can see topping that without drilling lots of holes and redesigning the whole closet!

i am planning on getting some cheap hanging shelves/ drawers... i figure i can fill up the white space that way, and store some clothes.. or more importantly spare tubulars and bike gear. hahah.

and for the record, i do see space for N+2 but that's gonna involve hanging from wall.

I did this recently. Hung 9 bikes vertically and at an angle to the wall. I hung my hooks ~13" apart. It's pretty tight, but that's what I could do in my basement.

It is a bit tight but IIRC the hooks are something like 11-12" on center. I basically (I am not carpenter by a long stretch) just figured most of my bars are 44-46cm so I took 46 divided in half a roughly converted to inches.

It looks to me you have the room to hang 3 off of each side wall, just below the clothes bar. Then add a bar in center to hang 3 more. They would need to be staggered up and down to make room for the handle bars.

Packed like sardines??

Not quite. Where then is the tin box? Your bikes are also not suspended in liquid.
