On aesthetics I'm not a huge fan of carbon blades, but the alloy looking campy ergos are, IMO, among the most beautiful parts ever developed. YMMV
Sorry, can't go there.....Brifters just don't look right on older bikes.

That's not entirely true. In addition to their bulkier shape and hoods, and the fact they are designed to be used with modern bars, I find the added tangle of cables to be less attractive.

The cables are less attractive - I won't argue that one. It's less clean.

It's all aesthetic preference, and this being a c and v forum, I know I'm in a minority.

My objections also go toward simplicity and serviceability. I know how to set up and
service brifters, but I just find them to be a little painful in terms of all those teeny
internal pawls and springs and stuff.

For me personally, simpler and more easily rebuildable has a lot of attraction.

I am a simple soul, and easily amused..........................

I am not even sure that is the case - many guys here do like brifters -(maybe even most) - but then there are many who abhor them. I fall into that latter category.

You know how it is...everything is a trade off. Like Dylan said - "every pleasure has an edge of pain, so punch your ticket and don't complain."

i honestly love the look of alloy ergos...but yeah, the cables are a mess. It doesn't hurt that ergos are my favorite shifting mechanism.

To me Dura Ace 7400 has some of the ugliest parts ever to blight a bicycle, but the stuff was revolutionary and awesome in function. There's no excuse for those awful brake levers though - in terms of aesthetics or function.

Less talk, more hot! (please)

p.s.: 7402 is my favorite group, particularly aesthetically. I even think it looks good on a Merckx, but that's probably because I grew up seeing them on Motorola's Merckx'.

To me Paselas are perfectly functional and mostly aesthetically pleasing (if a bit chunky looking) tires. A city or touring bike can be hot with 'em on. A fast bike needs something fancier, preferably with a file tread. Challenge's? Grand Bois'?

Yeah, I'm being pretty picky here, but it is a "Hot or Not" thread after all.

edit: In the interest of hotness I think that the cables should all be the same colour as well. Picky picky.

I can see your point on the tires - The Paselas do look more 'practical' than the others.
The contrasting color is actually deliberate: For some bikes, I choose a little accent color for the rear derailleur housing. (I think it adds balance.)

I think we're getting persnickety to the point of missing forests for trees. That Trek is hot and I'll duel any man who says otherwise.

Pasela's are a great choice 95% percent of the time... including this case. You're right about the saddle and pedals though. **coughbrooksteamprocough**

edit: actually, I think 23's would look better, keep em paselas though

And in defense of D/A 7400, these are simple, but light and beautifully made-

Just taking a downtime-day here at mom's and decided to get some pics of the bikes I'm leaving here.

1980 Alpina:

How I wish I dared to ride this with the milled-out post! In any case, the tubs aren't glued up...

Mattheis - hot. Hey,it's a Pinarello! Beautiful!

DD - hot. That's probably the nicest Alpina I've ever seen! OK, probably the only one, but still, very nice!
