It's the Denis Leary style of selling in advertisments then. Not friendly at all, but the target customers watch and listen anyway. Denis made a number of commercials that pretty much sounds like he's B-slapping you with his almost condescending sounding lines....

This reminds me of the billboard add for Tarrylton Cigarettes in the movie Idiocracy.

And yes, I feel this movie is pretty much what is happening to 'Merica.

Here's some truth about retail, when you loath your customers it is time to get out of the business.....Shame we CVers aren't a little more compassionate with the lost souls out there...I bet you your son's and daughters will be singing the praises of all things "Surly" one day...Just ride don't be snyde or critical of a trend because we were all a little trndy at one time or another...IMO, Ride Safe..All.

All this hipster talk is funny to me, because most of the Surlys our shop sells is to the 60+ retired crowd who have the time to go touring on an LHT. They are most definitely not hipsters.

Curmudgeon Wrings Hands Over Dry Humor

So. . . this thread was started to complain about a modern bike company's marketing technique that you don't like and you post this in the C&V forum? Well, you did a fine job of choosing your audience to be the one most sympathetic to your opinion.

But, you didn't buy anything from Surly or require assistance from their customer service department so you have no idea how they would actually respond to a customer with a legitimate question or concern right?

I feel life would be just that much more boring without sarcasm, but that's just my opinion. I also try not to get butt hurt about perceived insults that weren't even intended for me. Sarcasm and surly attitudes are probably much more prevalent today than they used to be, which kinda sucks I'll agree, but so is victim mentality.

I think it is funny that so many folks can't tell the difference between "butthurt" and a person seeing someone doing something extremely stupid and self-destructive and shaking their head over it. It's like seeing a junkie with a needle hanging out of his arm passed out in the street. Their problem, not mine.

Surly can run their company into the ground for all I care (and probably eventually will at this rate) -That is their business -literally!

If I want to shake my head and tut-tut over it that is mine. If you want to call it "butthurt" or think I'm "upset" over it go ahead. I'm not really offended, just forwarned that this isn't a company I would want to deal with in the future. If you think I"m "upset" over it I can tell it is WAY beyond my user level to be able to show you just how wrong your assessment is of me.

Whatever...

Surly's surly marketing approach is just a dusted off approach similar to when snowboarding went commercial. Rather than ask skiers to give up their skis, it was about reaching for a new youth driven market, that wanted to stand out from the crowd by being non-conformist.

When skiers had form fitting parkas and pants, to this day snowboarding outfits make Carhart work clothes look custom fitted. Gnarly snowboard graphics and a hand lettered look, stood out from sleek silk screened designer graphics.

But as Sixty Fiver said, bikes aren't all that different and are tried and true technology, so sturdy no nonsense bikes with a quirky marketing position can appeal to a wider age group.

It's amazing how many male college students shell out twelve Ben Franklins for a Surly, ride it on campus, and lose it to theft in the first month. They would have been better off buying a vintage ride for their daily commuter and saving the new steel for weekends.

I concur. And hitching a ride by standing up on someone's rear rack is a bit dicey too.

Which is the Biggest Dummy in this photo?

Like somebody else said, it's a brand they're selling. Surlys are made in the same Taiwanese factories as Specializeds, Rivendells, Huffys and Colnagos.

For me, my next bike is going to be from Bikes Direct. I'm tired of getting ripped off by the ridiculously expensive Seattle bike shops.

Yes, I have my asbestos undies on.

Haha, so you aren't even offended by Surly, just turned off from them by the perceived notion that they run a bad business, even though your'e the only one with the gripe and tons of people ride and love their bikes. Love this thread.
