Nah. The only unforgivable sin would be cutting the rear derailleur hanger off a very special frame.

Bikes: one of each

Yeah, welcome to the forum, sorry if I was a little harsh. It was the bike, not you. We're usually a bunch of nice, enthusiastic guys, though sometimes we take a little getting used to.

No, but if you had purchased that bike for the outrageous asking price the group would have a hard time not laughing in print.

Observe here and watch the actual transaction prices of ebay, forget the asking prices to begin to get a feel for a reasonable price on things. From time to time a true once in a lifetime opportunity happens, but those are few and far between.

Bikes: Yes

It is pretty cool to see in person, but with a price tag like that, I was kinda scared to even stand next to it out of fear of damaging it.

justdon, welcome to C&V. There's not a bad apple in this bunch, and compared to most on-line forums we're all pretty mellow. It's just that Budget Bicycle Center, the Spacelander seller, isn't exactly the most popular ebay seller here.

I saw your first post, and have to say cycling is a great way to lose weight, get into shape, and stay in shape. In the mid-eighties I hit 240 pounds and decided to start riding again for exercise. As I began increasing the mileage on my weekend rides, I shed sixty pounds and felt much, much better with lots more energy than when I was heavy. I'm seventy, and if I can do it you can too.

I haven't lost any weight, I've just gained a lot of bicycles. Get out now while you still can.

Too late, already had substantial damage, possibly structural from the looks of it.

Bikes: A green one, "Ragleigh," or something.

I think it's a bargain. Provided it comes with a lifetime supply of 18-year-old virgins and a $41,900 Velo Orange gift certificate.

In those circumstances, I want it BADLY.

Your wonderfully apropos joke just reminded me of Bob Saggett, when he was still young, hungry and had a promising (pre-sellout) standup career ahead of him:

"I used to come home every night and say to my girlfriend, 'I want to make love to you badly', and she always replied, 'Yeah well, at least you don't overestimate yourself.'"

Bikes: Many

You can buy a new spacelander for a lot less. I think a guy in Boston owns the tooling and name. I may be mistaken.

I bet he'd let you have the tooling and the name for $43,000.
Oh, and to reiterate advice I've given previously, don't do a google image search for "naked redhead on bowden spacelander".

Does anyone know how many of those things were made, and how many survive?

Upon actually reading the eBay listing, I found the claim that about 550 were made. Did you mean to say that about 10% of these have survived?

Since Otto Cap reportedly exported only about 400 bikes to the U.S. circa 1960, I arguably have something (actually two somethings) as rare as as Spacelander.

If they are shipping using what is called a fine art shipper (common with museums), then this amount isn't that crazy assuming the cost includes good packaging. I doubt that is what would be happening here.

I have. I bought a 1972 PX10 at their store in Madison for 300$. It was, however, in the years before they discovered the richies to be had on ebay-- around ten years or so back.
