Head Tube Lugs....a Picture Show

Loved the tread on pics of Dropouts, so, thought one on Head tube lugs would be fun, interesting, and good for a quick overview when trying to nail down those odd, old, repainted frames. Pretty Lugs...EYE CANDY!

OK, I'll play.

Otto Cap of Vienna, Austria favored these ornate head tube lugs in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and almost all of the 400 bikes he exported to the US had them.

Looks like Tange Champion lugs. We used those on the Trek 170s (753 tubing). I still have a set here:

Here's an investment cast Champion lug:

Cool! Love the feel of the Bridgestone (with 700/28s), handles the rough city streets and cobbles MUCH better than my AL framed FELT (AL fork and 700/23s....OUCH on Bricks!) The Bridgestone frame is...comfortable, but a touch small for me....so no LONG rides on her.

My '71 Atala mixte has a very similar headtube. I'm still not 100% sure if it's lugged, or stamped to look like that. (?)

Spacemanz, where is your serial number punched and what is it, (any OTHER identifying stamps or markings?) THIS one is on the lower NonDrive side seat tube, VERY roughly stamped. I Was told it was a 81 Torpado, but a LOT of things just don't add up....

Sorry I didn't see this earlier, I went shopping, had dinner, etc, etc. The serial number is on the seat tube, on the drive side, near the top, and it's 71C4625. I'm sure it's an Atala, as it still has most of the stickers (not decals), including a large one with atala on the downtube, and a very small one saying giro d'italia on the strongly sloped top tube (this is a mixte frame). It's definitely lugged, I see, but the lugs on the headtube section are really smooth, like feathered in or something. (?)
