NOS Simplex SJA 102 FD's

Just stumbled across this today...looks like you can get a NOS SJA 102 (double) FD from Harris for <$30 shipped. Is this common knowledge I just missed? Seems like a great deal relative to Ebay prices.

Bikes: 1986 Alan Record Carbonio, 1985 Vitus Plus Carbone 7, 1984 Peugeot PSV, 1972 Line Seeker, 1986(est.) Medici Aerodynamic (Project), 1985(est.) Peugeot PY10FC

It's a pretty good price, but not a fantastic bargain as they usually go for around 40ish bucks at eBay most of the time....same goes for even the more unusual French style braze-on mount version....
These Simplex FDs are not really impressively made, as they still employ a lot of stamped and folded steel parts for their mechanism. The SLJ model has more aluminum parts on them, thus they go for a lot more money.....

Bikes: '84 Colnago Super; '90 Bridgestone MB-1; '81 Trek 930; '01 Cinelli Supercorsa; '62 Ideor Asso; '87 Tommasini Super Prestige; '13 Lynskey R2300; '84 Serotta Nova Special; '94 Litespeed Catalyst; etc.

Ugh. Simplex. Purveyors of exploding mechs made from non-reinforced Delrin. The ones that didn't break prematurely were heavy, and overpriced, with proprietary attachments to the dropout in the rear.

As good as their retrofriction shifters ever were, that doesn't make up for the aggravation of thousands of boom bikes trashing their back wheels after mech immolation.

My PX-10 has a tapped drop hanger and a Suntour Superbe Pro derailleur.

I'll suffer through the purists' rage if it allows me to ride without worry.

If you need a FD with a stop, as all 70s Peugeots do, that's the one you need. No Super LJ FD has a housing stop. I have three of those and they work very well. The steel is nicely finished and the weight difference between them and an all aluminum FD is insignificant to me.

Nothing wrong with stamped and folded parts, as long as they work. Huret was famous for making impressive derailleurs from stamped and folded sheet metal, both steel and titanium. And stamped metal is preferable to molded plastic, IMO:

But the only plastic on this derailleur is the name sticker...

It wasn't worthy of a response.

You're wrong anyway. That tag is aluminum. The rebranded Gipiemmes got the vinyl tags that fell off as soon as you took them out of the box.
