Replacing or repairing a Simplex Super Competition FD..?

Hi All,

I'm brand new to this site so please be nice to me

I'm currently restoring a vintage danish bike (SCO) from '81. Its equipped with a 10 speed Simplex Super Competition set of derailleurs. Shifters are mounted on the stem.

The FD (see attachment for more accurate info on model etc.) broke in half so now I'm looking for a replacement for both FD and RD that will fit shifters and cassette/ no. of sprockets (two in front and five rear).

I want to keep it vintage and low budget. I've googled my way through a lot of other Simplex models but I'm not quite sure what fits - especially with the shifters...

I'm planning on replacing the FD now and the RD whenever it stops working or breaks in half.

(PS: This is a re-post from the Bicycle Mechanics forum - just moved the post here)

I just checked out Ebay and there's a lot of Simplex components there. You might find direct replacements for what you have now, or you may choose components without the plastic delron bits. I think a lot of derailleurs will work so long as the FD fits the bike's down tube diameter and, if it doesn't used a hanger, the RD is compatible with the rear drop out.

^This

If you don't care to keep it original, most derailleurs of that era will work, and often work better than the Simplex bits. When I broke my Simplex SX610 RD on my 1985 Peugeot, I swapped in a SunTour V-GT until I could find the proper replacement part, which I wanted because the rest of the bike was original spec.

Those probably won't go cheap. Look for alternatives I think, Suntour is a good choice.

I'm about to buy another old bike. It comes with Suntour Cyclone derailleurs and shifters mounted on the stem.

If the condition of the derailleurs are any good, the plan is to replace the Simplex with them. Hopefully the Suntour group is compatible with the Simplex cassette.

That's my plan by now. Let me know if it's common practice to update - makes the search function so much more useful I think...
