Bagged a FSA RD-80 aero wheelset today for $30 (a pair of Specialized 700X23Cs were thrown into the bargain as well). The wheelset fits perfectly on my '83 PKN-10. Certainly not in-keeping with the vintage look, but it'll certainly come under the 20 pound mark, if not 19.

Also bought - from the same fellow - a not-so-classic-and-vintage, year-old Jamis hybrid for $20. Gives me something to tinker with once I complete the Peugeot. Drilled for discs too, on both the frame and fork...

Take care,

-Kurt

EDIT: Pictures!

all right. I finally got something to add. I bought a lot of five wheels (got a helicomatic rear, Swantak, that you can have for shipping). In the lot were a pair of red label Edcos. I've been trying to match up a set for two years (gotta rear, no front).

mswantak 01-28-06 05:58 PM

Works for me; lemme know how much the shipping is.

A college / neighborhood garage sale yielded a MotoBecane Super Mirage
for $5.00 today. It has a Suntour Gt Derailleur(no Huret  ), Wienmann Centerpulls
and a 3 front chainrings with '049' stamped on the left rear dropout.....Im guessing
that means 1979 ?? The finish looks a little tattered but its all there and
everything works ! My first vintage Frenchie and a new winter beater ! :D

Not vintage true, but that's a heck of a deal for that wheelset. If you decide to go vintage they'd eBay for enough to buy a few sets.

They had 'em priced a bit high at 16 bucks, but it was half off day! What's your latest cool find?

I've learned that you'll find the greatest gems in the most unlikely places. I found a Sachs 7-speed straight-block freewheel, 12-21. The list through my local dealer is $75 - on line I've seen them around $39. I paid $5! Yo!

bobdanger 01-29-06 05:52 PM

i landed my concord pacer for 10 bucks- it needed a couple parts like a seat and post and crank set and i was stoked- recently acquired campy fixed hub w/rim and tire and a miche competition front hub for a mere pittance- lets just say i got a great deal and im oh so happy

karmantra 01-29-06 06:24 PM

OK OK, I know it's not a bike, but it's my catch of the day! Picked up a 'classic' red/yellow Burley D'Lite folding trailer w/ alloy wheels in beautiful condition--looks like it has hardly been used. Came with bug cover, not the rain cover, needed a snap fixed on the cover and a tube for a tire. Only $25.00! I'll use it as a cargo/kid carrier! :)

Now here's a bit of an oddity... picked this one up this AM at an auction, got it cheap, no one else knew what it was, so they went and fought over a pile of shiny roadmasters... it's a gen-u-wine European city bike, a Kettler Paramount Mt. 1x7 gearing, fenders, locking rear wheel (with key), rack, small tool kit, generator lights (back lens is broken, but otherwise okay), 700 x 35 tires, Shimano exage compnentry, kickstand. Even has the sticker from the german shop still on it. Pretty neat. Follows my general rule of bike hunting, which is to never look for anything more specific than a "bike." I've found you have to stay open to what you find, if you look for anything specific you never seem to find it. I would have rather had an internal hub (that would have driven the price down from the 25$ I paid), maybe a different bar (something north road or nitto stylin', probably could have gotten it for a fiver then.) But hey, it's pretty darn cool. Front fender is bent, but should bend back (metal, not plastic).

Everest 02-02-06 03:57 PM

Well it's not a bike but here's my latest catch it's not a bike but cool none the less. I got it from ebay for $20 including shipping would have been cheaper had the guy who sold it not listed it as Punk Emo Tshirt Campagnolo and had some guy who didnt know anything about bikes or what Campagnolo was bid it up. Anyway its a vintage Campagnolo T-shirt, I've never seen another like it and dont think I ever will. White yellow and blue with full color world logo.

Heres the auction pic:

Who knows if this will be a catch or not. Perhaps so. Took a flyer on a Rapallo listed on St Louis Craigslist. not complete, but had Stronglight 93 cranks, Mavic rims, frame has chrome stays and fork ends and was represented as lightweight Italian. Simplex ends on the rear. Still not sure what I have, but the cranks look good and the Mavic rims turned out to be 700c rather than the 27 I was originally told. No fancy lug work, but it looks interesting. For all I know, it may be gaspipe. I am on the road and will not take delivery for two weeks. The seller kindly took more pics at my request. What do you think? Very little to be found on the net. It has been put forth that this is a repaint of another brand frame and that the Rapallo decals are actually bogus. Anyone recognize the frame as something else? Once I am home, I can check the threading.

mswantak 02-02-06 09:16 PM

Can't remember ever seeing forged dropouts on gaspipe. Unless you dropped a couple hun on it, I'd think you're safe.

$50. The crank is worth that to me.

On the Rapallo, measure the seatpost-- should give you some idea of frame quality, place a manufacture maybe... For 50$, sure, no problem, I'd take a shot too...

Somewhat cheaper, this Peugeot UO9. Stronglight cotterless cranks, dustcaps intact. Atax stem with the 7mm bolt; phillipe/atax bar. From about 78/79. Likely a parts bike, can use the HS and BB (swiss or french? hmmm....). Nice rack. Seat bag helps my ongoing desire to corner the market in tire irons in the next five years, plus brought the price of the ride down. Also scored a frame pump and brand new 27" whitewalls.... for some strange reason, BMX pedals.

Here is my junk yard A-D built with spare parts layin' round. IT's a full 531 Inter 10

nome.king 02-03-06 07:10 PM

Infinityeye - Your AD is my dream frame. I've been trying to find a black Inter 10 or, even better, a first generation Vent Noir in about that size for the better part of a year. Would you consider selling or trading it? PM if interested... I still have several of the items listed in my post, above.

Man, all those great finds, and you're still lusting in your heart? ;)

And please don't tell me that that Miyata 310 is a 55cm frame, in great shape, the wrong size for you, and you would have sold it to a new buddy (me :D) on Bike Forums for $50.00.

nome.king 02-04-06 12:05 AM

I bought the Miyata on Monday. Its a 53c/c or 54.5 c/t. Its in pieces at the moment, in line to be cleaned and polished, destined for eBay. I do try to sell whatever doesn't fit or isn't to my liking. Obviously I have too many bikes, but I have an irrational fondness for the design of the Austro-Daimlers.

I'm not sure, I got it at the junkyard it had phil hubs, 6 speed with a triple avocet crank (the kind with the bolt on granny ring, a campy seat post binder!, avocet seat and post, superbe side pulls with those old salmon guys pads, a cyclone mark II rear mech (a very old one) a rusty cyclone front mech, suberbe brake levers and I think shimano friction down tube shifters. The frame was 126mm in the rear and is I (who am color blind) think a very dark dark red paint job. It has gippemae (or however that is spelled) drops I think, but I might be thinking of my razesa frame...

Not much was good except the brake calipers which I was able to rebuild, they are great brakes BTW. I built the frame with shimano 600 brake levers and front mech. an XT rear mech, the wheels are maillard sealed hubs from an '87 peugeot with a suntour winner 6 speed, suntour seven speed bar cons, aluminum bars, old old SR stem, bontreager carbon seat with cheap pedals and seat. I used some cyclone 7000 cranks with a nice bottom bracket.

Definately a franken bike it also has profile bars set up for touring, but the tires on the rusted out wheelset still has the nubs! I think I was somewhat campy equiped at one time, and the frame is in very good shape, I love the way it rides.

It's crazy despite all the rust on the phil hubs they still spin smooth. It's too bad they rusted as I don't think the phil steelies are very common any more.

Where's this freaking junkyard?

You need to work at those hubs...they are worth an amazing amount of money if they are in reasonable condition.

I went to the nearby habitat for humanity looking for something I might use or build up as a commuter. The only thing I found was a small Western Flyer. It is red and black, and interestingly, it is lugged. I'm pretty sure it's got 26" wheels. It didn't look terribly bad, it looked like it could be fixed up nicely. The cranks and freewheel were rather rusty though, and it was missing a front brake. A shorter friend of mine's been looking for something to ride around, and I thought this might do the job, so I paid them the five dollars and said I'd come back for it. I've been looking online, but have yet to find a similar looking WF. It's like a traditional men's frame, with a horizontal top tube, and it's got lugs I tell you! What do yous guys think? I'm thinking of just going back and getting my money back (lol), I don't have the tools or money to get it rideable.

Seb.

nome.king 02-05-06 06:07 PM

I saw a lugged men's ten-speed Western Flyer with dropbars at a Goodwill recently, looked like it was from the late 70s. It had a rather unsafe looking rear disc brake. Very, very strange. They wanted $40 for it and I'm poor, so I passed it up.

bigbossman 02-05-06 07:09 PM

A 1987 hot pink (made in Taiwan) Trek 900 18 speed with indexed thumb shifters. Came with a working computer and bar-end mounted rear view mirror. High stem and upright bars - a nice upright riding position for the aging hippie that will be the recipient.

The frame is sound and the paint is great (if not a it loud), tubes are good and the wheels are true. Needs a good cleaning, saddle, tires, and chain. Surface rust on all the exposed steel parts, but all the bearings feel smooth.

$30. I wouldn't have spent so much, but it'll be a gift for my Sister-in-Law.

Brockster 02-05-06 09:31 PM

NISHIKI CUSTOM SPORT SERIAL #KG 53390

Remember the one that got away when you were young? I saw a white Nishiki ten-speed back when I must have been in junior high or highschool in a small bike shop in Cincinnati, Ohio. I fit me perfectly. I already had a 'ten-speed' so it was no-go.

Last week I hit a thift store in Dayton that I frequent for salvageable PCs. I found a blue 27" Nishiki Custom Sport ten-speed. Sugino Idol crankset and Sun Tour derailleurs. Nothing fancy compared to most of what I have read about on here, but it was mine for $5.99. Lugged frame made from 'Hi-Tensile Toshiba tubing' -the decal says so!

Just needs tires, tubes, lube, and handlebar tape. Then it's good to go! This will be the first bike I have owned (and been excited about) since I rescued a mid-1970's steel Italian 27" (and later wrecked during a rainstorm) in the summer of 1988.

Hey T-Mar! Any information from your database on this one?
