Stuff on Sun from CR

"Sun first began the production of cycle parts in 1885 and by 1906 were producing a range of machines. Their main period of fame was from the middle 20s through to the 50s. The Wasp was a popular almost budget priced lightweight aimed at the Clubman. Tandems represented quite a large part of their output. In 1940 they launched a new version of the Manx TT model which did not enter manufacture until 1945/6. It featured a seat tube joining the down tube about 2/3s the way down with a couple of extra struts from the bottom bracket to the seat tube. All this was done to make a short wheelbase which was seen as desirable then."
"Frames from the late 30s right into the 50s were also marketed under the Parkes name. In 1959 they became part of the British Cycle Corporation which was absorbed by Raleigh in 1960. From 1963 Sun machines bore the badge with Worksop rather than their original Birmingham. The name finally died under Raleigh in 1986. There a few good quality Team Replica bikes from the Sun/Truewel Racing Team made in the late 60s."

A real find is a coaster brake 3 speed internal. Evidently I've never seen an external 3 speed;). I only have two of them,, and one is laced into a Sun Rhyno Lite. Nothing like multispeed, and not having to deal with hand brakes:D No single malt and slippers, but Draft english beer and a dirt stripe on your back maybe? haha.,,,,BD

Sorry dude, I emailed before 8 am, and by 11 I was driving back home from Hwy6:p . It is an older model with non adjustable height, dark gray powdercoat. I don't know how I did without it, and I only used it once so far, hehe,,,,BD

Ah, then it's the same model as I've got so no biggie. I see you're already flipping the Talera on CL, not a bad profit at all if you can swing it ;) ....

Well, not that much of a profit. Serfas drifters are not a cheap tire, back when I bought them I think they were about $25 a piece?. Add to that $16 for the bike, $14 for cables, $12 for a new chain, Various chemicals and degreasers. I'm making about $25?

Actually, I think I will go get some cheaper tires, if they were on a more expensive bike, then I might leave them on. Somebody's going to offer me $100 or less, I just know it, lol. If they do I'll have to say sorry, no tires.,,,,BD

Definitely keep the tires for another ride, most folks buying on CL wouldn't appreciate them anyway. Did you know you were going to flip it when you first bought it? If so, Bell cables and chain at WallyWorld would have been about half of what you paid and are more than adequate for a bike like that.

Too bad I already have a couple of MTBs, I really like that paint job :D ....

Yeah, bought it to flip purposely. The only bad thing is that my local Wal Mart is the West Road and 45 store. They stopped carrying the parts a while back. No cables, no chains, and ONLY goo filled tubes. They only have brake shoes now, and those will probably be axed soon. Also have you noticed that the bell chains for 1/3 speeds are about 15 links short of fitting an adult bike? I was really pissed when I got one, and it wouldn't fit a single speed beach cruiser.,,,,BD

$1 from ebay. An old Phillips. I've never seen one of these in BRIGHT ORANGE Kind of obnoxious really. But for a dollar I can't complain.

Those wallyworld bell chains (KMC Z) are $5 here, so buy two and join them together:p

I really don't agree with wallyworlds business ethics, but for fixing up old bikes, they have the best (cheapest) parts around! Grips, seats, chains, brake pads, cable kits, tires, ect...

That's bloody cool! And a color cordinated speedo too! We must see pics when it's cleaned up.

My sister brought me a Schwinn Moab home from her job. The poor thing was sitting around without any tires/rims/chain. So now it's mine! CroMo frame, beautiful red "flat" paint, "S" shaped seat stays and the chain stay on the drive side is also "bent" downwards. I'm having a heck of a time trying to date this bike.

A mens early 70's Bertin road bike. 58cm. Nice Norex brand saddle, appears similar to an Ideale.

It was $25 and he also sold me a mixte for same. The guy had bought them at a garage sale in SF for $8 each and was happy to triple his money. :)

I WAS 30 MIN LATE ON THAT SALE!!! What a coincidence!!! WOW! I was talking to him for awhile last night. He knew NADA about bikes, and I was afraid to tell him too much, in case he turned out to be a thief. He got them at a garage sale? whew!

Vintage Gold Raleigh Sports
 

I picked this Raleigh Sports up for a twenty spot at a thrift. Need's a little steel wool and elbow grease and I'll probably find a home for it on CL in a few weeks. The chrome pump is rusted up pretty good but it was on it. I like the parcel rack in matching gold! I haven't had a chance to date it yet but I'm guessing mid 60's.

1991 Bridgestone MB-6
 

I got this 1991 Bridgestone MB-6 in mint condition (all original parts) for $60 at a pawn shop. Looks like it had been in someones garage for all these years. I was looking for an inexpensive bike to tow my son on the bike trailer and this fit the bill. I have since swapped the knobbies for slicks, added dual sided clipless pedals and a rear view mirror. It came with a rear LED light and an Avocet 40 computer (unfortunately, the computer is pink - not my favorite color). Now, I ride it more than my 2 sleek road bikes!

I looked at that thing down at Thrift Town in San Leandro a few days ago; they had it marked $39.95. Is that where you bought it? How'd you get them to come down to $20? Usually they won't budge. I finally decided to pass because it had too much wrong equipment on it; saddle, levers, shifter, pedals. That, and the sheet metal was all dinged up.Oh -- by the way, it's a 1971 S-22 Sports.

He bought it from some dude in the Bay. Probably not the same bike? I was right behind him, and missed the sale. The seller gave me a 'thief' vibe, but who knows?

At last, I can report a serious catch of the day! I had wanted to give up on buying bikes that I like, I have far too many already, and the repaint of two really nice ones (the 72 Presto and the c. 75 Zieleman) is under way, so why not be content and just ride the bikes! The weather is good enough, that's for sure.

Anyway, while surfing our local CL (m'plaats) I struck upon a very recently (half hour) placed ad for a Gazelle Champion Mondial (yeah, here we go again!). The ad said '753'. 753? Wow! Seller wants 100 euri for it, and has a phone number. I call, say the 100 is fine, and drive off in a cloud of dust to pick it up.

So now I have a lugged 753 bike, vintage 1979 or 1980, fair condition, and well equipped with some Campy Super Record parts. Very important: the bike actually fits me! So let's find out if it's really as whippy as the story was back in the day!

Yep... Thats where I got it. I had a $20 off coupon for a purchase over $40. I wasn't going to pay full price for it because of the condition but I thought $20 was worth the risk. Thanks for the date info. I haven't had the chance to investigate anything on it yet. I've got a Brooks B-72 saddle I was thinking about using it on but I think I'll save it for something else since it is a little rough. I was passing thru on my way back from Modesto and stopped to get gas down the street and just stopped by the place. Hardley ever see anything there and its always way overpriced but thats the place to go for kids bikes.

That explains that. I'd really have to be lucky to find anything there then.

Not classic or vintage, but a good Catch Of The Day, regardless: Marin Shoreline Trail frameset w/crankset. Traded a fellow a Shimano 105 crankset (thanks Bob!) for it. Had a spare wheelset on hand, and put a cheap Schwinn MTB front fork (with a steerer that's too short) in place for the moment.

God help me to find another fork at a reasonable price...
