My first "catch of the day" post. Unfortunately this bike is way too small for me but it is in great shape, don't think it was ever ridden. Looking at the vintage trek site this appears to date from 1989. Has all Shimano 105, Matrix rims and tires, Look pedals. Brought it home last night and cleaned up a little today.

Ride on dude! Should be a fun bike. I'm still looking for a really early Trek in my size...

Poguemahone 04-05-05 07:43 AM

Speaking of early treks, I've been trolling ebay lately, due to a surplus in my paypal account, and nabbed this little fellow:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=7146048876
I'll post some pictures once it arrives, but from the S/N, looks to be a 1977. Getting set up with a Brooks saddle, Simplex retrofrictions, Campy/Rigida wheelset, and Suntour cyclones, all from prior finds. I'm stoked, it will be sweet.
Also this gitane, I fell in love with the dropouts:

Too bad about the replacement fork. I have no idea what to do with this one, but I can build it up fast if I want. May repaint it black; usually I like to save the decals, but there are none this time and the paint looks kinda yucky. But I like the drops (don't worry, I'm not about to cut them out of the bike and close a garage door on it.

Nice Gitane there. I love to see nice work at the drops one
of the things I really like about Sacha White's Vanilla bikes.

Big community Yard sale this weekend, usually see some good
stuff, will report back.

Marty

Won't be any fun at all for me - it's WAY too small... unfortunately this one might get parted out. :(

Hmmm... 54 ctc works well... Watcha got? I'm wanting pre 1980, and Reynolds 531 or Columbus SL...
Got stuff to trade ;)

luker 04-05-05 06:50 PM

I have no 54's. I have a 1979 tx900 columbus 52 (charcoal, finish just okay, no stickers or headbadge) or a 1979 tx930 (complete with receipt!) columbus 57 in green with good stickers and headbadge (glued). Finish is pretty good on the green one (I wouldn't refinish it - it has some rust tracers on the bottom of the downtube). The smaller one belongs to my wife, but she likes her pink 770 way better. I like the green one a lot, but found and built a '77 over the winter. They are almost exactly the same bike so its kinda, like, well, um, redundant, I guess. The '77 was built by Mike Appel, and the '79 was built by Tim Isaac, the '77 has Cinelliesque fastback seat lug, the '79 is more like the rest of the steel treks. You couldn't tell the difference if you rode 'em blindfolded (ouch! the pavement feels exactly the same as it did falling off of the other one!)

Oh, that green 930 sounds nice... I think it would cost me more to have my legs surgically shortened, than to find one the right size though... ;) If you come across an early one 54ctc, please keep me in mind... :)

try some 800 wet-or-dry sandpaper, and a lot of patience. Using H20 will help get rid of what paint is cut off the frame, but the paper doesn't last too long. Use small pieces, try to use strips, and buff around the tubes as much as possible, like shining a shoe. If the 800 is taking off too much of the underlying paint, go to a finer grade. If you have a really light touch, you could even start with 320 or 400, and just keep going to a finer paper-higher #-to keep the original finish intact. It takes patience, but you can end up with a finish that bears little evidence of the cover-up. You might want to check with the local police before spending any time with it, as that sounds like a burglary cover-up paintjob.

I can't seem to ignore ANY of the old treks. I'll keep y'all posted.

Not bad. What's the serial number?

colinm 04-07-05 01:31 PM

Dunno, will advise.

Bolt-on wheels, yuck. I have a set of 27*1 that are much nicer. I'll add those, too.

mswantak 04-07-05 01:43 PM

Awww, you suck -- it looks nicer than my Grand Prix. :p

colinm 04-07-05 02:13 PM

...and no cotters.

Dunno what it is about Raleigh, but the last 3 bikes I've found have been.

Was asking because, if it's late 70's, you don't have the original wheelset. Still, would be hard to complain for what you paid.

Yeah, I got cotters -- but I've got a Carlton frame with the cool wraparound seat stays to make up for it.

Not sure if yours is, but one I had a while back was a Dutch Gazelle-built frame. Pretty bike, yours.

mswantak 04-07-05 05:56 PM

I see there's a Dutch-built GP (a '70, I think) on eBay this week; my '72 is English though. Thanks for the compliment; if you liked that, wait'll you see the silver and blue '68 GP I'm working on next -- all original, right down to the Brampton track hub and wing nuts. Prettiest non-531 Raleigh I think I've ever seen.

Found a FleaBay auction of a Campy Velox derailleur that looks just like mine. Enjoy!

These are all nice bikes, but I absolutely HATE the pie-plate spoke protectors.

If you've ever had a chain overshift while grinding up a hill, you learn to appreciate them! They are ugly on a "racing bike", but quite functional on on a tourer. They were always the second part removed by teenagers years ago, when the wanted their bike to look racey. First parts off were the reflectors or fenders if your bike had 'em.
