I hate you..... :D

I'd LOVE to find one of those, especially for $20.00.

BTW - new rule for "Catch of the Day". Ya gotta post a picture of what ever you find, or you can't post! I need to get my thrills vicariously though the thrill of others. :)

Absolutely - and those don't belong on a bike. Whomever is collecting royalties for the cantilever brake has stolen their way to fortune.

Made in Japan 27" front wheel, with bolt on skewer, -1 spoke, crusty tire and rusty tube. The price...same as war (abosuletley nothin'!). Add $4 for a spoke, nipple, and some Velox FOnd de Jante, and you have my catch!

Nice catch, El Twe! I recently snagged a very nasty looking pair of dumpster wheels... brought 'em home and wiped them down, and they proved to be Rigida blue labels laced to Normandy high-flange hubs. They would have needed all new spokes if I'd kept them intact, but I wound up tearing them down for the rims... which will be put to good use!

Checked the Goodwill store & found only junk bikes, but on the way out spotted a brand new Zefal narrow front fender with stays. just what I've been needing for my old Centurion Pro Tour & only $2.99. Now I can replace that busted up Blumels!

Picked up a set of rollers for indoor training today at auction, 20$. Would probably have been a fiver, but it was stuck in a lot with a bunch of vacuums, so the two vacuum dealers bid against me. One of them was a bit pissed I won, but if he'd have talked to me, I would have given him the vacs for a ten. After I hauled the rollers out to my car, one of the bike dealers approached me and told me he had a couple of old Peugeots he wanted to get rid of, so I drove over to his place. The bikes were a UO9 and a UO18 (the touring model). Neither frame was in good shape-- the UO9 had been in a massive front end collision and the UO18 was a rustbucket. I traded a cheap Schwinn mountain bike and a cheap chain tool for them, tho, which got the Schwinn out of the basement and left me with only three chain tools. In return I got a parts pile:

1 pair Stronglight cotterless cranks
1 Alloy body Simplex rear mech
1 pair Swiss (!) thread bottom bracket cups, very good condition
1 Guidons bar
1 French thread headset
1 pair super cool full coverage fenders, soon to decorate my UO8 beater fixie, complete with sticker from Dutch bicycle shop (the fenders were, I admit, the main impetus for the trade)
1 Nice pair KKT pedals quill style with clips and straps, new condition
1 pair black mafac half hoods in very good condition
An extra french thread lockring
Various odd bits for the parts box

Not a bad trade, methinks. The Schwinn I bought for five bucks because it had a working generator light set on it and I needed one for the Kombi, and had been gathering dust in my basement for awhile, and the chain tool was an extra, so no loss. Wound up tossing the two Peugeot frames, neither was really salvagable, although if the UO18 were a PX10 I would have tried. The UO9 was beyond saving, but after the wreck the owner had obviously put a new fork and some new parts on it, to what purpose I can't imagine, since both the down and top tube were badly buckled. Perhaps it was to give me a nice little spare parts pile.

Nice, and a lot of wrenching for those rainy days!
Just out of curiosity, what's the name of the Dutch bikeshop?

Poguemahone 05-30-05 05:56 PM

Sticker is partial. M Van Rijn(?). May not even be a bike shop. "Dennweg (something)k Hooistr(obscured)" then "(obscured)ENHAAG". I geuss the last two are the address, you may correct me. I've always wanted something unintelligible and Dutch on one of my bikes. :)

brokenrobot 05-30-05 08:33 PM

Poguemahone - How does that UO8 weigh out once it's stripped down / fixed? I've got one here I've been trying to decide what to do with... a fixie might be just the ticket, if it stops being such a boat anchor once all the steel components are stripped off the frame...

Poguemahone 05-31-05 06:07 AM

I believe mine is about 21-22 pounds. That's a 63cm frame. Once you get rid of the steel wheels, steel cottered crank and and other stuff, it actually weighs about the same as a Bianchi Pista (rides and looks better, too). The PX fixie is around 17, a bit under I think. The UOs make really nice beater frames, but some of the stock parts need trashing if you're going to make them a rider.

What limited info I have says Peugeot claimed a weight of 27 pounds on the UO and 21.5 on the PX.

I was at my LBS the other day, he knows how I like mixing and repurposeing older stuff, he said "Hey, single speed guy (even though I still don't have a single speed), you showed up on a good day. There's a box a junk that's going to be thrown away; take what you want."

the swag:
1-heavily oxidized and weather beaten Sakae CX triple crank with rings. Cleaned up to a mirror-like finish with Mother's mag cleaner, thanks to whoever for that tip.
1-Shimano 600 Front derailer, will be going on my old French project bike.
1-unknown front skewer, crappy, let me take the DuraACe skewer off my winter beater and put it on something more appropriate.
1-Old Campy Skewer, may be unusable, there's a broken bit of skewer inside the right fastener preventing it from screwing on.
1-DIaCompe front brake
2-bottle cages, one beaten up Nashbar brand that went right onto the beater, and one noticeably lighter made in Italy job, brand unknown.
1-old shimano deore brake lever.

Dennenweg and Hooistraat, Den Haag (The Hague, you know, of the international court of justice). I remember a bikeshop there some 15 years ago. Maybe it's gone. Classy area though, center of The Hague.

Cool! Now I can impress Dutch ladies... Seriously, thanks for the translation. I always like to know these odd little bits. The fenders should give the UO8 even more "character", whatever that is. As if I didn't like the bike already. It's always curious to find out this stuff, which is why this board-- and this thread-- are truly superb. Thanks again!

I just found a Peugeot Mirage frame on the street. It is tange 5 and in rusty condition, but has a Stronglight cotterless crankest. I'd hate to throw away something useful. Is the cranksest worth keeping? The allen bolts holding together the two chain wheels seem to be imperial size as my metric keys won't fit.

rcourtis 06-01-05 05:56 AM

this a raleigh team professional----possibly 1977---and probably 23 1/2 inch frame.
i own a pristine 1976 raleigh pro in 22 1/2 inch, so i know these things.
beautiful bike.
latin lines.
hand made. signed by the frame builder. mine came with a tag that i may still have, signed by a mr morris. i forget his initials.
i am thinking about updating the rims to mavic open pros.
probably a bad move. it came with ava tubular rims.

Please forgive me, but what is a Raliegh Team Pro?
I must have been sleeping in class again...
If you're wanting rims for a late '70s Team Pro, then Mavic SSC would be correct for it. They're getting harder to find though...

lotek 06-01-05 10:08 AM

hey, I was sleeping in da same class (or lack of).
Baron has some 28 and 36 hole SSCs both blue and chrome
but they are kind of expensive!

Nino down at the Bait & Ammo shop told me, eh? And hey -- I even know about Peshawbestown. :p

I was born and raised in Lapeer (graduated high school with Oklahoma City bomber Terry Nichols  ), and lived in Muskegon before I moved out West.

ItchyZipper 06-05-05 11:33 AM

I went to an area wide garage sale; at the third house I found a dusty Fuji Royale with flat tires, and in my size! It had a $1 sticker on it! I didn't even try to talk them down! It will become my new SS. I'll get a pic on the site when I can.
