So you're in Charlevoix now? Nice area. Ever try explaining Petoskey stones to somebody who isn't from Michigan? :D

And comparatively speaking, it's always summer out here. That's why I moved. ;)

Charlevoix.....about another 5mi south near Norwood. I love to ride the "low road" (division road) that is more like a two-lane sidewalk in the summer that runs from Norwood village down to Eastport.

Petoskey has changed alot over the years. The Gaslight district is still there ;)

recently I got a trek 820 mtn bike from the library where my wife works. its a mid 90's model so its nothing special. it was abandoned before the collage students all left town for the summer. to small for me but still a great free find!

but my greatest catch ever happened sat. morning. I went to the local dollar general to pick up clothes detergent and a few other things. I was on my bike since the wife still drives the truck to work. I got to the store early before they opened so I decided to cruise the allys in the area to see what I can find. I see a couple old bikes leaning against the side of a garage and a couple ladies inside. there was no sign so asked if they were haveing a garage sale and the reply was "yes". I inquired as to the price of the bikes and she offered $25 for both. or $15 each. well, one was on old monty ward model worth little to me,but the other was a Schwinn. I already have quite a few old chicago schwinns and I really like them and seem to be able to find alot of them. this one however is special.

its a 1941 cycletruck! I never thought I would actually see a cycletruck except online, let alone find one for myself. and on top of that its a rare pre war model that seems worth a little more then post war models. now I dont buy them for the resale value or for the rarity of a certain model,I just but them for fun. as soon as the llbs can get me a big ol wald basket it will become my new grocery truck. it has the wrong fender,wrong front wheel,stingray apehangers,and someone has changed the skiptooth sprockets to modern parts.but the rear wheel is original,with the correct new departure hub,original cranks,pedals and chainguard. a little clean up,a couple new used tires,and it rides great. I have already got at least 4 "cool bike"comments and I have only ridden it around the neighborhood a couple times.
Ahhh. summertime on an old schwinn! :D

Things have been slow here, they always seem to shut down about this time of year, but here's my first bike in about a month. Eighties (that's a geuss) vintage Torpado Beta. Columbus Allelle tubing, lugged, gippemme drops. Campagnolo shifters and front/rear mechs, not sure of model (hey, it's Italian, not French). Universal model 125 calipers/Universal levers. Ofmega Mundial Crankset, Ofmega pedals, Ofmega hubs laced to Ambrosio rims. Tange Levin Headset. Needs about 10cm more of seat tube to qualify as a real catch. Overall, decent shape. Not sure what to do with it, but I sorta want some of the parts, just not sure what for.

Ummm - give it to me for my daughter's birthday? :D

Nice one, Lotek! I won't say I'm terribly envious of the shipping charges you're likely to run up, but that is a very nice looking ride.

Friend of mine literally fished an 850 out of the Snake River recently. Catch of the day, indeed! It was rough, but the water's cold and it kept well enough to donate to Salvation Army...

looks like a 980 rear and a gran sport front. okay stuff (I think that the rear outperforms a nuovo record, but doesn't have the panache.) So, how many bikes do you have today?

RIH's are rare here in the States. Looks like it should provide Dave Tesch style handling with that fork rake. Only guy in the States that I saw with one was a cat.3 trackie 30 years ago.

left a bunch of bikes here after racing (in late 70's?)
they show up on e-buy every now and again.
I don't know, I just have this thing for Dutch bikes,

To make up for the midget Torpado, a 62cm Austro Daimler Vent Noir II. Full Campy Nuovo Gran Sport, Cinelli Bars and stem, frame lugged and butted full Reynolds 531. :D . A bit sawdust covered, in need of an overhaul, throwing the campy shifters off for some simplex retrofrictions, a brooks saddle, a bar mount waterbottle cage, and should make a nice little ride. Fortunately, I know just the man for the job. :D . Probably going to thin a Trek 400 out of the herd for this one, oh well.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I am going back and whine some more about how bad this time of year is for me to find bikes during.

Man; nice stuff lately... Mercian, RIH, Vent Noir II... LUCKY..!! I can't even find a Sledgehammer with shocks and pegs (gotta see Napoleon Dynamite). Guess I've been spending too much time actually riding ;)

As you know, otherguy, finding the vintage stuff tends to ebb and flow... there's no rhyme or reason to it, and you can't actually look for anything because you won't find it. Your time is coming, and around here, it will seem a dry desert wilderness bereft of any fine rides, and the beaten old Huffy sport will turn into a Cinelli before my thirsty eyes before it cruelly turns back to the Huffy... gawd, I hope not.

Interestingly, I found the Vent Noir while riding. Well, not riding, exactly, but I was getting on the Trek 410 I rebuilt recently to ride home when a gentleman came up to me and said he had heard I was interested in older bikes. This was at the arts center where I teach. I knew him; I had taught his son several times, currently he's taking a welding class with another teacher. Said he had a bike he no longer rode, that he wanted to get rid of it to help finance a motorcycle project. Went over to his house, saw the bike. Asked him what he wanted for it. He said make an offer, I did, he took it, I took the bike. Sometimes it's good to be known... likewise, the Torpado was found by a guy who knows my interest in vintage rides, bought it, and offered it to me. I doubled his money. Still cheap, anyway you shake it.

based on my precise and scientific "number of campy bottom bracket axles" test, I think OtherGuy has just short of $1.67 million in bicycles stashed in his mammoth garage. He probably has to ride all of the time, just to keep the grease stirred up in all of those headsets...

Yeah; I know it works that way...It's just been dry lately. Good time to go riding too, as it'll be too bloody hot here in another month, unless I start out at 6:00 AM (which is what I'll have to do). Congratulations on the cool finds!

Actually 2 garages, a living room and a bedroom... Sad part is though, most of 'em never get ridden, as I'd have to relocate too many to reach those piled in the back. Sometimes I forget what all is there... Had to go digging for a box to ship a frame in yesterday, and I found a Waterford RS-11 frame I forgot about. Got it NOS off eBay 2 years ago (cheap!!) & stashed it in one garage before my wife could see it...;) Since I shipped its box out, I guess I'll need to put it together soon & put the Colin Laing I've been riding into the stack... I do like that Laing though.
