Today's find: a full-105 Miyata 310 in showroom condition (but for dry-rotten tires) for $5. Talked the thrift-store down from $10. Not as special as some you guys have picked up - but it fits like it was built for me, and will take over for my touring bike on the trainer!

I see yours has downtube shifters. The one I found has the "brifters", so it must be newer than your '96. I wonder when they made the switch?

Hey, you missed that Diamondback - when I went there it was gone. They did have a Shogun road bike for $30.00. I passed on it cuz I was in a hurry, but if it is still on there Monday I'm going to pick it up. I think it would make a good 1st road bike for my little girl.

Picked up a Centurion "Iron Man Dave Scott" thing this weekend... Blue with white head tube and Shimano 600 bits... Tange Champion #1 tubeset. Looks to be in nice shape; saw no dents, wheels are true, paint decent... $29.99 at the Willie. I'll post a couple of pics after I clean it up. It's a pretty big frame - maybe a 58-60cm or so...more eBay fodder or trade material ;)

here is my best catch in the last few weeks.

Aluminum NOMURA 24" BMX frame. Why is it a great catch?

Nomura made about 300 frames tops back in the early 80's, almost all out of aluminum. Today, there are probably 20-25 Nomuras out in the vintage bmx world right now, and they are perhaps the most collectable frame in vbmx world. (check out the prices on ebay!). This is the ONLY 24" version (took both front and rear 24" wheels) that is known to be around. Nomura made 20" and cruisers that took both 26" wheels, and a 26" on the front, and 24" on the rear. This bikes serial number is "Randy001" and was used by Nomura factory racer Randy Robertson.

The IRONMAN... It's a Centurion "Dave Scott Master Ironman". My guess is '87 for the year model. All Shimmy 600 with Biopace rings... I'm still cleaning it up, but it's in really nice shape. It rides well, but the geometry feels slow/sluggish to me...Probably great for century rides.

I know where I can get the same bike, cheap too. In a 62cm if I recall correctly. BUt my friend bought his around 1991, same colors.

Yai! I have a Dawes Galaxy just like that. The lug paintwork on mine is a bit more blingy.
Alas, over the years, it has evolved:

the Simplex Derailleur fell of on a road somewhere in Wisconsin. It now has a Shimano 715 or something
When the whole Hybrid thing took offin the 90's, the down bars became straight bars (where the heck are those down bars? I dont think mine had al that gingerbread)
The wonderful Brooks B5N that was stock has migrated to my '04 Felt F65
(HINT: I am looking for a useable Brooks saddle to fit back on the Dawes or the BOttecchia that I am rebuilding; anyone have one to sell or trade?)
The Toe Clips have migrated to my girlfriend's road bike

Otherwise it is stock (ha ha)

What was the other Dawes model in their line from the early 70's? Can't recall the name... like it was a planet

Today - Red Benotto 850 with Shimano 600 Arabesque for $5. Small dent in the DT near the HT. Didn't come with the pictured wheels...

Just picked up a Raliegh Technium 440. 27" wheels, 6061 bonded alluminum frame, with a magnetic wind trainer.......ten bucks, all in like new condition. I love Yard Sales!!!!!!!!!

It's been a busy couple of days at work, with lots of local travel. The good news is that while out and about, I came home with a few bikes....... :)

Bike #1 is one I picked up today for $30.00. It is a little blue Peugeot "Super Sport" of indeterminate year, made out of 103 tubing. 10 speeds, chromed forks, Simplex junk fore and aft, center pull brakes, Stronglight crank, and steel dimpled wheels. A very pretty blue though, and in excellent cosmetic shape - probably a garage hanger most of its' life. I was in the middle of evaluating another $30 bike (a red Shogun) for my daughter, but this one is pretty clean and might jump to the front of the line - I'll let her decide.

Bike #2 is one of a pair I picked up for $90.00. This one is a light blue Univega 12 speed Nuovo Sport mixte made from Cromoly tubing. Essentially new, with owner's manual, wedge pack, rack, tool kit, patch kit, spare tubes (NIB), and a first aid kit. I doubt it has 50 miles on it, and it belonged to the proverbial "little old lady". All Suntour components. All it needs is adusting and cleaning - practically perfect in every way! Looking through tha owner's manual, I found the original receipt dated 1983 - $250.22

Bike #3 is the second half of the Univega pair, a Grand Tourismo made from 1024 tubing. It has some light rust and paint nicks, but it is in very nice shape overall. It came with the owner's manual, a rear seat bag, rack, spare tubes (NIB), tools, a patch kit, and a Zefal pump. While the tires are sun rotted and in need of replacement, it does have barcon shifters. Again, the original receipt is in the book, dated 1983 - $351.40

How good *is* that Huret shifting? There's a bike with full Huret here I've been eyeing... trying to decide if it's worth the cash!

Today's find for me: another Miyata. This one's a 610, just my size... bought it for a winter commuter, since it's got those nice canti brakes! Nearly perfect condition, sealed-bearing Suntour, $20.

Excellent find, but I have to ask if there really is such a thing as nice canti brakes? I'd ditch them in a heartbeat for side-pull or center-pull. May not have the same mechanical advantage, but they stay in the position they are supposed to be in.

In the snow in the city, yes. For normal, everyday riding, I like a nice dual-pivot sidepull - but for keeping clear in slushy muck, nothing beats canti, IMO! And it means I get to use the caliper brake mounts for fenders ;)

If it works for you... I end up with the dang things rubbing a rim - or even the tire.
