Catch of the Day

Salvaged this 7 speed Fuji Sandblaster mountain bike (20" wheels) from the trash heap. Cleaned it up, put on new cables, water bottle cage, and chain. Voila. My 5 year old daughter loves it. Now she has a bike with gears like her brothers, and she wants to ride it all the time, much more than her single speed Trek.

mswantak 06-26-05 06:58 PM

Kids, go figure. My 10-year-old grandniece has a 24" 5-speed MTB but would rather ride her 20" single-speed stunt bike. I think she's too lazy to learn how to use the shifters, so last time we went riding I dropped her like a bad habit -- just to illustrate the advantage of gears. :D

phidauex 06-26-05 07:26 PM

I just bought this Titan road bike, mid 80's, for 155$. These titan frames are going NOS for 135$, so I figure a lightly used version plus Shimano 105 components is worth 20$ more. :D

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=7164586753

Its my size, and looks to be in great shape. I haven't decided if I'll ride it like it is, or if I'll convert it to a fixed gear... I suppose I'll just have to ride it and decide.

Anyway, that was my 'high dollar' purchase for the month. In a little bit a friend of mine and I are going dumpster diving, since tommorow is trash day. ;) Got some goodies last time, and this time should be even better.

peace,
sam

That is an awesome bike, phi! Those toe clips, 105 components, and of course...BioPace!

phidauex 06-26-05 08:09 PM

I'm excited to try out the biopace. I've never used it before, so it should be interesting. The bike looks really well maintained, and while the tubing seems to be Columbus Aelle, which isn't their top of the line, its also not the bottom, and there really isn't any 'bad' columbus. The toe clips are nice too, shows that it was riden by an actual cyclist, instead of just some bonehead who replaced the pedals with a black plastic set off a Huffy because they didn't understand why you'd even want toe clips.

Exciting!

peace,
sam

Old Red Ross Road bike with really cool short wald fenders- $1

I've heard pretty good arguments for and against the 'biopace is bad for your knees' concept... I'm not really sure what to think right now. However, I'm more of a masher than I am a spinner, so I'll give them a shot and see how I like it. If I don't, I'll just pop on some new chainrings and hang the biopace on the wall as an oddity. ;)

Oh God Everest...I love that Epic! Is that a Brooks on the old "just for the brakes" cruiser?

mswantak 06-26-05 11:37 PM

Looks like an old Messinger to me.

Thanks, unfortunately it is not a brooks just a cheap old seat though in that picture it does look like it.

I mprobaby over paid, especially compared to the many deals listed in this thread, but here is my 1984 Trek 720. I bought it from the original owner. I plan to clean it up and replace some parts ( as needed) with vintage looking parts that work. No idea of course how many miles are on this, but seems to be in great shape.

Congratulations! You have one of the most sought-after Treks ever made! Ranks up there with a Madone in my book.

Fine Steel vs plastic? come on Luker, everyone knows
(or should) that an OCLV frame isn't nearly as nice as
the old 720s. . . (insert smilie of your choice here).

Yeah, that's a great old ride, my friend.

You are right, of course. For most things steel is just better feeling. Steel bikes seem thin, and sharp, somehow. But...when the going goes up, or I'm supposed to be able to keep up with someone, the OCLV is the bike that I pull down. Or for the last couple of years, a Raleigh Team with Record 10...I said somewhere else, I like the ergo stuff just a little better than the Shimano.

Probably all in my head though. Blindfolded, a strapping iron bike probably feels okay. You'd crash just the same, and the ground would be just as hard.

The LBS has a Lance-signed gold trek (Madone?) - just got it in a couple of weeks ago - $11,000. I'm not saving my beer money for that, though.

cabaray 06-28-05 10:39 PM

Not an earthshaking find but its never been ridden. It still has the Shwinn accessory handle bar bag ( on the saddle) with a never been used pair of Shwinn riding gloves. What can I say, its a bit to small for me, its a girls model and I don't need another bike. So hopefully I can pass it on to someone that needs it for the same price I paid, which was nothing! I just cant pass up those NOS free bikes.

USAZorro 06-28-05 10:46 PM

I bet that if you put that up on Craig's list for $100.00, you'll soon have people bidding on it. (and this from someone who has no interest in Schwinns [me])

Black Shuck 07-04-05 08:03 AM

Bought this Peugeot yesterday, I'll probably get it in 2 or 3 days. The seller didn't know much about it such as model/age, but it's a 12 spd, over 10 years old and in average to good condition.

http://gallery.wwwsite.nu/albums/iro...geot.sized.jpg

If anyone knows what model and year it is, please tell me.

Oh yeah, I only paid 38 € for it :-D

el twe 07-04-05 10:43 AM

Probably 70s, judging by the suicide levers...

Black Shuck 07-04-05 12:30 PM

I looked at the pictures at http://home.wanadoo.nl/peugeotshow/ and the decals seem to match the ´83 models. The gears didn't match any of the models there but I guess they don't have all of them on the page.

inkvision 07-04-05 01:28 PM

My favorite find is my new (old) March 1970 Black (with white pinstripe on fenders) Schwinn Breeze - spent $40 at a garage sale, plus $40 to replace the front wheel with an original, new gum tires, streamers, etc. and voila... that and lots of "free" elbow grease, derusting everything metal/chrome...

This weekend got the Spin Doctor Stand for $7 and the Raliegh Competition for $60. In excellent rideable condition for it's age. Wheels arent stock but I'm told by the original owner that they are top of the line aftermarket, true as can be and the pedals are made by whoever made the wheels. I'm about 4 days into looking at vintage bikes and I like it. Most of the paint just needs polished and what few scratches there are look like paint tranfers that will polish off. Had the big fenders on it but I just didn't like the look or the flimsyness of them. Thought about removing the light but it works so doggone good. So now I'll try and post the pics. If they show up great if not I'll figure it out. Only problem is at 6' I wish it were a couple centimeters bigger. Probably try to keep moving up till I can get a classic showpiece like i see so many of in this forum. $60 was an ok buy, right?? http://home.comcast.net/~cgn25/RalieghComp1t.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~cgn25/RalieghComp1.jpghttp://home.comcast.net/~cgn25/RalieghComp2t.jpghttp://home.comcast.net/~cgn25/udtht...lieghComp2.jpghttp://home.comcast.net/~cgn25/RalieghComp3t.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~cgn25/RalieghComp3.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~cgn25/RalieghComp4t.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~cgn25/RalieghComp4.jpghttp://home.comcast.net/~cgn25/RalieghComp6t.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~cgn25/RalieghComp6.jpg

Oh just a side note, not vintage but still a real score; same day I found the Raliegh I picked up a Klein for $25 at a local sale.

Hey; let's see pics of the Klein! I like them too...
That's a cool early '70s Raleigh Comp. Hubs and pedals are '70s period Phil Wood; very good stuff. Nice find!! BTW- the hubs are worth about what you paid for the bike. Same with the pedals, the rear derailleur, triple for the frame.... You got a killer deal!

A real bargain. As can be witnessed by the seat post extension I tried to make it fit. Even the wife said no. Incredibly she's gonna stick with her old Motiv heavy as it is. If I had to guess, her main gripe is the flourescent color. She calls it "construction orange". Says keep looking though so up to auction this one went.

http://home.comcast.net/~cgn25/klein1.jpg

BUT!! I got way lucky again and believe it or not just picked up a Bianci Boardwalk in excellent conditiion for $20. Now I have to choose between the Raliegh that rides like a dream but don't quite fit (I wish it were a few cc bigger) or the Bianci that does fit but doesn't have the classic appeal. I guess at this rate I can just keep trading up...I like it!!!!
