Here's a nice Magneet I spotted in my neighbourhood. Sorry about the crap pictures. The owner may let it go for a few bucks.
Is this any good?

af895 08-22-05 01:09 PM

re: Magneet...holy crap! Snap that one up - if for no other reason than the AWESOME brakes and three-armed cranks! That's one I'd snap up just to put on a wall...

USAZorro 08-22-05 03:10 PM

Personally, I think I would pass it up, but it is an interesting looking bicycle.

A bike with somewhat "fancy" lugs should be worth something nowadays. I really deplore the way lugs became plainer and plainer in the sixties and seventies. "Back in the day" fancy lugs were a sign of a really good bike. Later, even the expensive hand built bikes had lugs that only a plumber could love. Today, with all the composite "frames", all that is gone.

Thanx to those who steered me to the Wald catalogue. I phoned there and was told they no longer make a ramshorn handlebar. Apparently the one I'm looking for is fairly old and has only about a 5" - 6" rise.

A friend gave me a mid 70's Schwinn Suburban last night. It was too big for him - i'm 6'2" and it fits me pretty well. It's a real beauty...I'll have to post some pics soon. It's blue with white pin stripes on the fenders, and has the original saddle bag. The overall condition is very good, just a few small dings in the paint. And as I've been telling people today, it rides as good as it looks. It has a very solid ride and feel to it, and shifts and brakes extremely well. What a great bike for short trips around town.

Picked this one up a few weeks back at a thrift shop. It was marked $9.95, but I happened to be there on 1/2 price day. I finally got around to cleaning, tuning, and putting new tires on it.

Peugeot Mixte 1
Peugeot Mixte 2
Peugeot Mixte 3
Peugeot Mixte 4

Under all the dust and grime, it was an all original 1979 Peugeot mixte, with working Simplex running gear. And one of the cleanest one's I've ever seen. Shifts and rides flawlessly, a very stately ride - my wife even remarked on how smoothy it ran when she took it for a spin.

Turned it over to a S.F. city girl tonight, and boy was she thrilled with it. I love it when they squeal with delight..... :D

What Thrift shop are you buying at? Really nice bike!!!! The girls just love those kind of bikes, my wife included. As far as them squealing with delight, it brought back visions of granduer.... :D

Well now, wouldn't you like to know! :p

Truthfully, I do a fair bit of local traveling for my work, and so have the opportunity to hit thrifts all over. From Burlingame to Santa Cruz to Modesto to Stockton to Sacramento, I have a wide area and a fair amount of shops to browse. That particular one came out of a thrift in Sacramento, as did one similar to it about 6 months ago.

Oh, and I NEVER get tired of causing young women to squeal with delight......but it's too bad the reason for the squeals has changd over the years...... ;)

Turned it over to a S.F. city girl tonight,

Heheh -- he makes it sound like it was free, doesn't he? :p

Yes it was, relatively speaking, - Besides, do you really want to measure the profoundness of a young woman's joy with the yardstick of capitalism? :p

Hmmmm.....maybe so...... :D

Here are some pics of my newly acquired Suburban. Just rode it back from the barber shop....what a great ride.

No pics but I just bought a Kona Fire Mountain Race Lite from an auction sale for 10$CDN. It has a ding on the headtube, but I just couldn't resist as this thing is soooooooo light, has a nice 400GS groupo, a Synchros stem and it is the perfect size for a friend of mine. Everything works well, it just needs a quick cleaning and it will be a great winter bike for the mean streets of Toronto. My friend is ecstatic and she too squealed with joy (when I told her the price).

1983 Le Tour Luxe. Stem says '80, BB says '82, Headbadge indicates 1983 I think. There are 3 serial #'s on the frame in various locations.

I know I've never seen this font on another Schwinn, though.

I know I've never seen this font on another Schwinn, though. 4130 steel, Shimano Altus, Weinmann, and I added the wheels, Rino's. Crankarms ar mismatched - Maxy on non-drive side, I forget what's on the other. 52/42 x 14/24 with stem shifters and saftey levers!!

Got it for $20, needed a serious cleaning and the previous mismatched wheels were shot.

colinm 08-24-05 11:16 AM

That was weird?!

muccapazza 08-24-05 12:06 PM

You're freaking me out, man.

So how do you like it (the Luxe)? I missed out one for $45, saw it at a thrift store, 2 hours later on the way back to check it out closer, it was gone. Did I miss much?

Anyway, I just got a Univega Super 10 for $15 at a St Vinny's, frames big and in good shape, rear derailler's broken off, though. Kitted out same as the Luxe for the most part, Shimano Altus and an ugly SR or SUgino crank, not that all SRs and Suginos are ugly, just this one.

colinm 08-24-05 01:06 PM

I like it plenty, but it's 3rd horse in a 2 horse barn. Wheels make a big difference, but overall it's laid back and solid, comfortable. I actually like the stem shifters. (ACK, did I say that?)

Scored this Peugeot Bordeaux at Goodwill no more than 30 minutes ago. 1/2 off sale got it for $6 bucks. Maillard hubs (rear hellicomatic), shimano gearing/lite action. The frame is almost mint, suprised, it was under 6-10 bikes as they hauled out the goods from the back warehouse.

colinm 08-24-05 01:08 PM

Augh!

That's quite a score. Good that it went to a BF member who'll take care of it. What was it doing under a pile of bikes? Some people have no respect!

Mavic rear wheel with Dura Ace freehub all for $26. The Technium is in good shape with just a few chips in the paint. Me being a complete newbie, the fit seems OK but is the Technium a decent ride? Worth keeping?

Technium sold new in 1990 for an MSRP of $1,700. You can read an article about it at this link:

Maybe this bike would qualify for catch of the month. Post pictures if you have them.

Name your price! :D

The bike was a (priceless) gift - the giver knows I'm into bikes of all kinds. The bag is original to the bike so it should stay with it. Besides, I'm not one to sell things that were given to me as a gift. The bag says Schwinn on it , btw.
