sweet!

Wish I knew more about those cranks... anyone?
That doesn't mean Super Record does it?!?
Who made the Motobecane-branded cranks?

You should be able to get at least $200 for it. I recent sold a similar bike (Lotus Classique) but with only one original wheel and two old matching Schwinn wheels (the steel ones without quick release) for $150. Mind you, the rest of the bike, including the original wheel were in near mint condition. Right now is high season, so you can get top dollar. Good luck.

Rob -- Those wheels are most likely Rigidas, and the Mirage didn't come with a QR on the rear. The low gear on the freewheel would be a 32.

Jack -- Unfortunately, the SR doesn't stand for Super Record; it's a Japanese component supplier. You'll find cranksets, pedals, stems, bars, etc. with those initials.

Yup -- SR = Sakae Ringyo Ltd. They bought out SunTour in the mid-90s.....

Did a Mirage come with a dimpled front rim and smooth rear? Maybe what I've got is original. Need to look at that rear hub again now that I've gotten the crud off'n it....

Ahh, of course, I should have known that. Thanks for the edification.
As a recent vintage Moto owner myself, I'm still learning about the sometimes confusing
mix of Euro and Japanese components found on their bikes.

Both original rims would've matched; the dimpled ones are the Rigida Super Chromix I mentioned. Honestly, I'm not sure which one of yours is the original; I think by '78 they'd stopped using the Rigidas.

raleigh_fan 08-05-05 06:40 PM

Ok -- I plead bad light and lots of crud. The rear hub is Maillard, not Normandy. The front is a high-flange while the back is low-flange. Not sure if that would have been typical.....

raleigh_fan 08-05-05 06:46 PM

Cool! I've graduated from newbie to junior member! ;-)

mswantak 08-05-05 08:02 PM

I'm pretty sure the high flange was original equipment.

helicomatic rear hubs had a spiral setup for the cogs to slide onto and a non-binding lock ring (you don't have to muscle the lock ring off). I'm thinking that you need a tool to get the cogs off of the hub...

The ratcheting mechanism in the freehub had a poor reputation - but in my limited experience they're good hubs.

OK guys, I found a Raleigh Technium with Suntour Accushift and six cog Shimano SIS freewheel, Dia-Compe brakes and a Flite Titanium saddle. Has time trial handle bars which I don't like at all. Also got a Scwhinn magnetic trainer with it as well as another Rigida wheel with 7 cog Hyperglide, two front hubs (Mavic I think) and a Campy 26 x 3/4 wheel with good tire and Dura Ace hub. Mavic rear wheel with Dura Ace freehub all for $26. The Technium is in good shape with just a few chips in the paint. Me being a complete newbie, the fit seems OK but is the Technium a decent ride? Worth keeping?

Walter 08-07-05 08:26 AM

Can't go too wrong for 26$ period. In this case you did pretty good. Techniums were decent rides. Raleigh made the frames from steel and aluminum and the tubes were bonded instead of brazing, lugging, etc. The higher line the better quality steel and alum.

Your frame has probably been re-kitted but all the stuff you mention, particularly the Dura Ace, was all high line for its day. Real cool that you got some extras with it though you may have to play around with the indexing if you switch rear wheels. Might be better to set to friction mode. If it fits you definitely one of the better scores. :)

oopfoo 08-07-05 09:57 AM

I think Walter's response was a bit too subdued. If you got a complete bike with Dura Ace anything for $26, you did great. Raleigh has made some great bikes, and the 1980's vintages had some great racing bikes in the lineup. I wouldn't worry too much about setting the bike to friction mode, etc., just go get a book on bicycle maintenance and see what the differences are between the current models and your bike. Make up your own mind. You have a keeper.

A Soubitez Steady Light for my Raleigh's dyno light set -- $8.95 on eBay. It addresses the chief complaint about dynamo lighting; installed in the circuit between the dyno and lights, it powers the lights from three AA batteries for 30 seconds whenever the dyno stops.

And it even works!

$26, man that kinda deal never comes up in my neighborhood
Thats awsome.

SachaV 08-07-05 02:12 PM

Not a bike, but i got a 3TTT 79$ stem for 20$ at my LBS.

SachaV 08-07-05 02:13 PM

Oh, and I got a Bontrager Race Lite Lux saddle (standard on all 2005 trek road bikes) for 9.99$ instead of 60$.

here's a few I got recently a hercules 3 speed, I found it at goodwill, the ralleigh girls bike was free leaning against a mail box had two flat tires the front fender needed some straightening too, also a ralleigh rampar that also needs the fenders straightened a bit, it the fuji allegro and the 64cm c-c peugeot course just like my 59cm but blue instead of gray were dumpster finds along with a few other bikes not worth posting that I will be saving for someone, as can be seen the peugeot has had straight bars from a kids bike added and the fuji has been hobo'd but has some nice suntour barends

Here is a World Voyageur that I just got off eBay a couple of weeks ago. Original Dura Ace cranks, Crane and Titlist deraillers, plus almost everything else original. $50.

mswantak 08-14-05 11:13 PM

Maybe 'Odd Duck of the Day' anyway; a 1972 Gitane mixte, apparently all original (although the Simplex Prestige mechs were shot). Stronglight crankset, Simplex downtube shifters, Mafac Racer calipers and street levers -- with curved, white plastic levers! Italian Grand Prix hard plastic saddle, Rigida Super Chromix rims on Pelissier hibs, shod with 27" x 1 3/8" semi-knobby gumwalls. And a double-action bell!

Anybody ever seen one of these? I sure haven't.

As a diehard Japanese bike fan, it's kinda neat to be getting my first Italian... a brilliant deal on this '82 Colnago Mexico, full Super Record. First thing to go is the saddle!

Second thing to do is put the stem down a little. My wife always gets mad when I have my bike in the kitchen...

Is that the original paint?
