Ask C&V: The Quick Question Thread

Do you have a question which you feel is not worthy of it's own thread? Maybe you have a question tangentially related to another active thread but don't want to derail that discussion. Hopefully, this thread will not be used in lieu of searching for answers found in past threads or get derailed by "is this a good deal" inquiries. If you want to show off your bike or open a discussion on a topic, by all means start a new thread (we like fresh content). But if you are looking for some random yet specific piece of C&V information, without the need for any subjective opinions on the matter, ask away!

I'll start:

1. What was the largest alloy cog made by Regina? I mean the low gear (A1 cog). I've seen a Regina cog board poster that goes up to 28t, but I wonder if they made alloy cogs in the 30t or 32t range. Anyone know?

2. Does anyone know what type of saddle was originally spec'd on a '74 Nishiki Competition? The brochure simply reads "genuine leather padded saddle."

^According the all-knowing Wiki, "Cobalt glass is a deep blue colored glass prepared by adding cobalt salt of alumina to the molten glass...The earliest know example of cobalt aluminate glass dates to a lump from about 2000 B.C." Now we're getting somewhere!

Yep, the ancient Egyptians actually preferred cobalt blue glass to lapis lazuli for its deeper color, even texture, translucence, etc. All that blue stuff in King Tut's tomb was glass.

But I need to ask a bike related question... Okay, how's this: what does cobalt glass have to do with bikes?

I think the little blue "stone" Campy used on Cobalto brakes is plastic. But just a guess.

I think the Nishiki saddle was a quilted top on plastic base, Japanese-made but I can't recall the brand...it was nothing special. IIRC.

What is the proper pronunciation of the word "butted"? Is it like cigarette butt or Butane?

Questions.........

1:What is "Butt" leather?

2:Why is it labeled "Guaranteed British Lightweight", when the damn thing weighs in at 35lbs. ???

Lightweight is relative. They used to be heavier, guaranteed!

Should I get a 16lb modern carbon bike when I can still lose the weight of some classic steel bike from my own azz?

Butt leather is from the animal's butt, as opposed to shoulder, belly, whatever. And yes, the butt is the back end.

If you think an English lightweight is heavy, you should try a Schwinn lightweight sometime. I had a Schwinn New World and I don't think the frame "tubes"were even hollow.

Blimey. Yer gonna get the thread moved to valuations. Careful.
And 35 pounds is quite light compared to an MG Midget or a Triumph TR-3.

Yup. The first change I made to my 1971 American Eagle (Nishiki) Semi-Pro (Competition) was to replace the saddle w/ my trusty old tensioned leather Ideale. One of my friends quipped, "All the discomforts of home." (He obviously didn't get it.)

I think Campag. went to 29T, but I have not seen an odd tooth count above 25 in a long time.

The handlebar is the "flower" sprouting from the "stem".

Bar-Con is the name SunTour gave to its version of handlebar end control levers. The name caught on and now everybody uses it to describe them no matter what the brand. Kind of like how people call tissue "Kleenex". <g>
