Interesting point on size, Jim. So, since I know nothing of handlebar inside diameters other that what I find on my very small collection of bikes....what IS the ID of bars? Of course, I know some are smaller than others. Hence, the expandable plug idea, like Velox rubber, and others, works well on various bars.

Anyone care to post the inside diameter of certain bars?

Or, is that fodder for another thread?
Or, is that just too ridiculous to be worthy of it's own thread?
Or, do I need to get out more????

D) All of the above?

Live Action Role Player (the guys who dress up and pretend to be things in a GAME with rules)

The other thing we're talking about is cosplay, who also dress up and pretend to be things.. sometimes with rules, but not typically a game or it becomes LARP.

Smokey just always makes me think of Smokey and the Bandit, totally skipped your actual reference in my mind even though it's another movie I love.

I just measured a nice SR somethingorother to be
23.8mm outer
25.4mm clamp (as expected)
19.6mm inner

But I still don't know how to account for bar tape pushed inside the end of the bar. Maybe it's supposed to be none. You folks are more fastidious about bar wrapping than I am. In the old days you wrapped stem to end and stuffed whatever was leftover into the end.

Thanks Jim. I always did that back in the 70's too. Wrap top down and stuff. It never looked all that great though, unless you snip wedges out of the stuffed part to make it sit well and look OK.

Now I don't stuff. I start right at the end to butt up against the plug, and finish the top with sealed thread or something.

Nope. It sounds like they need to send you some replacements or give you a refund. When installing mine I accidentally let the tension slip as I was shoving them in there but when I tried to pull them out it immediately became evident that they were not coming out intact, that is why I added the hemp twine.

The next time I wrap my handlebars I will use wine corks or Velox plugs.

Brainstorming now how to 1) get them to stay in, and
2) keep the weight short of boat anchor.

RB, a DIY fashioned sompression plug seems the easiest approach, essentially copying the Velox mechanism. Sourced a rubber bushing just shy of the I.D. of the bars. Run a bolt (a slotted brass one, perhaps?) through the brass plug and the bushing. Nut and washer on the bushing end. As you tighten the bolt, the bushing squishes out radially.

very cool - I hadn't seen this idea before. the execution looks great.

on a side note, we just had a champagne breakfast at my office and i discreetly gathered up all the corks... now I have several bikes' worth of C&V approved bar ends

^Yeah pretty cool.

I have a pair of Velox from eBay that I use. Kind of want the Grand Bois ones from Compass cycles.

Velox (my fave)
Cork - always looks good

bar-end shifters of course

I've used the PDW bamboo/cork plugs. They're crap IMO all looks, and fall apart easily

I would like to know as well. Regarding the Velox rubber ends, they're too big for some bars. My 50's Steyr drop bars with cork wrap, takes a 3/4" plug. I gave up and decided on 3/4" corks from a hardware store. Cost 49 cents. I trimmed the end near flush, leaving nothing to get bumped off. The taper cork holds the wrap perfectly fine. Nothing fancy but if you catch vintage bike racing vid's, a close up will show just plain corks.

I suppose one could add vintage stick pin back through the cork. Fleabay has cheap Cinelli, Semperit tire, or whatever one likes.

I've been looking online for 19mm OD soft rubber bushings, but to no avail. Is that, like, a regular hardware store item? I think I'm going to try my hand at this nonsense.
