Interesting point on size, Jim. So, since I know nothing of handlebar inside diameters other that what I find on my very small collection of bikes....what IS the ID of bars? Of course, I know some are smaller than others. Hence, the expandable plug idea, like Velox rubber, and others, works well on various bars.
Anyone care to post the inside diameter of certain bars?
Or, is that fodder for another thread?
Or, is that just too ridiculous to be worthy of it's own thread?
Or, do I need to get out more????
D) All of the above?

The other thing we're talking about is cosplay, who also dress up and pretend to be things.. sometimes with rules, but not typically a game or it becomes LARP.

Heh, I had "The Big Lebowski" in mind -- were they referencing Jackie Gleason in that part?

I just measured a nice SR somethingorother to be
23.8mm outer
25.4mm clamp (as expected)
19.6mm inner
But I still don't know how to account for bar tape pushed inside the end of the bar. Maybe it's supposed to be none. You folks are more fastidious about bar wrapping than I am. In the old days you wrapped stem to end and stuffed whatever was leftover into the end.

Now I don't stuff. I start right at the end to butt up against the plug, and finish the top with sealed thread or something.

The next time I wrap my handlebars I will use wine corks or Velox plugs.

RB, a DIY fashioned sompression plug seems the easiest approach, essentially copying the Velox mechanism. Sourced a rubber bushing just shy of the I.D. of the bars. Run a bolt (a slotted brass one, perhaps?) through the brass plug and the bushing. Nut and washer on the bushing end. As you tighten the bolt, the bushing squishes out radially.

very cool - I hadn't seen this idea before. the execution looks great.
on a side note, we just had a champagne breakfast at my office and i discreetly gathered up all the corks... now I have several bikes' worth of C&V approved bar ends

I like the expander type best. They are the most durable and reliable.

Velox (my fave)
Cork - always looks good
bar-end shifters of course
I've used the PDW bamboo/cork plugs. They're crap IMO all looks, and fall apart easily

I suppose one could add vintage stick pin back through the cork. Fleabay has cheap Cinelli, Semperit tire, or whatever one likes.
