I never cared for Spencos because leather gloves seem slippery and mushy on them. But then I never ride further than the occasional century either. A person who I rode with w/o gloves used to like them.

Update time - I did get in touch with Peter, who was very helpful. He informed me of the following:

"It was made for a Mr Tate from N.H. Delivered in mid 1979. 531 tubes, Cinelli lugs, b/b shell and crown. "Sport" tour sort of geometry. Painted blue. Back in the day the custom frame/ fork price, with extras was $433.45... Let me know when your ready for a new one..... Enjoy it, Peter"

So, adjusted for inflation, frame price was 1400 or so...today it would be 3-4 times more. I've decided that I get to order a new one when/if I become a licensed CPA.

The bike rides very nicely - it feels more like a full tourer than a sports tourer. Those tires just eat up Philly potholes - they're as nice as I'd heard. Running them at 80psi. The Spencos tape is not my cup of tea and will be replaced soon - maybe Handlebra.

I agree. Silver cages! Even the yellow housings pull from the focus of the bicycle a little too much, IMO. But not as badly when the cages are subdued to let the bicycle itself shine. What a beauty. When you get that CPA, let me know when you're ready to let this one go, haha :p

Gorgeous bike Aaron. As you know, a Peter Mooney is my "when I win the lotto" bike. Peter is a very good guy, and can often be found at Wheelworks. He is very approachable and incredibly knowledgeable.

I pass Wheelworks on the way home from some of my favorite routes. I'll often poke in to see if PM is in. If he is, and the shop is not too busy, I'll find an excuse to go in (new patch kit? energy gel? etc) and try to get him talking.

We met Peter Mooney once decades ago when he aligned the solo bike Sharon rode for some years. I get by Belmont Wheelworks every so often but haven't bumped into him there. I've admired his bikes every so often.

Aaron, what are those tires that eat up potholes so well?

I would have like to see that bike with the yellow cages. They might have accented the yellow hoods and housing nicely. OTOH, with silver racks the silver cages work okay too.

RS - Peter Mooney is pretty much top of my list as well, if/when I passed the CPA exam, my gift to myself might be a mooney. His stuff truly is top of class, and it makes me more interested in a Ron Cooper as well.

Hmm. I like yellow cages but they kinda' get lost against the white bottles. Now, black bottles would work really well. But don't listen to me. IMHO the most important thing about the bottles is that they don't make the water taste bad. The Specialized bottles are nice because of their flexible inner glass lining. Colors? I dunno'.
