1987 Schwinn Super Sport Build

I have had an 87 Schwinn Super Sport frame for 2 or 3 years now while I collected parts and decided what to do with it. The frame looked worse in person than it's before picture. My touch up job with an airbrush did not turn out to be satisfactory. I decided to take it to a local powdercoater. I asked them to reproduce the original Red/White fade but they ran into difficulties with this. I told them to paint the whole bike red knowing it would end up faster that way.

I used mainly some parts that I had on hand and acquired a few others:
Original headbadge
Dura-Ace hub for freewheel with a Matrix rim
Ultegra front hub with a Mavic Open Sport rim
Shimano 600/6400 Ultegra Crankset 52/42 with Biopace rings
Shimano 600/6400 Ultegra FD and RD and DT shifters and F and R calipers
Shimano 600 headset and bottom bracket
Shimano 14-28 7 speed HG Freewheel
Randonneur handlebars in aluminum that were original on my 73 Super Sport
Handlebar shim from Dr Pepper can
Nitto Technomic stem
Terry Ti Fly Saddle
Dia-Compe Aero Brake Levers
Sugino Seat Post bolt
SR alloy adjustabel seat post
MKS Sylvan Touring pedals
Fizic bar tape
Velocals Columbus Tenax sticker

It has mismatched tires with a Gatorskin on the front. I have some Panaracer Pasellas in 700-28 on the way. My friendly LBS Cycle Progression assembled it for me for a very reasonable cost. Thanks Emille.

Red; IMO the best color for a bike. Looks great. How does it ride?

Beautiful job! The weight is pretty impressive for a relatively large frame.

The powder coat turned out really nice. The finish isn't syrupy and there is good definition around the lugs. I have had a few frames powder coated with very good results.

Nice looking bike looks like it turned out very nice. Should ride great I have had a couple of Tenax framed Schwinns come through my hands they have a very nice ride quality stif and slid yet somewhat forgiving and comfortable. As for the wieght 23 lbs legit is pretty good exspecially when you figure size and some of the very nice but slightly heavier build choices made, vintage SR post, large vintage rando bars and heavy powder coat two color paint job will worth the 3-4 extra lbs.

Looks nice! Pretty loud, but it works. I really like that shimano 600 headset, despite needing that dumb tool.

+1 I would agree that the 600 Tri color was one of the best looking component groups every made.

You are correct- When I was a kid, I learned from the guy across the street when he got a red dirt bike. "Red means fast."

Looks great- love that Tri-Color stuff!

In the Schwinn catalog the Super Sport was listed at 22 lbs. Was this acurate? Has anyone wighed a stock Super Sport? Powder coating might add an ounce or two. I can't believe it would add much more. The Technomic stem adds a little. The Randonneur handlebars are actually very light. The Terry Ti Fly is probably lighter that the original.

I have a set of Dura-Ace 7400 hubs for a freewheel. I have thought about making a set of tubular wheels for this. How much weight could I save with those?

I'd keep it as is. Youll use the utility of the bike by trying to go lighter. Weight depended on frame size.

Very sharp! Can I christen it "Sporty Junior"? It is about 15 years younger, and like most youngsters, certainly much faster and more agile!

Those are my all around favorite set of handlebars, especially when mounted to a Technomic stem! I have them on about 4-5 of my bikes and much prefer them over any other bars I ride.

"Sporty Junior" I like that. Thanks pastorbob. Where do you find all of those Schwinn randonneur handlebars?

Sporty Junior is now keeping my 73 Super Sport and 86 Peloton company.

Mostly ebay. They were also on Continentals and that can be an affordable way to find extras.

I put a lot of miles on these handlebars back in the 70's. I always found them comfortable to the hand and their curves appealing to the eye.

I took Sporty Junior to Austins Veloway today to ride it for a while. It was not the fastest bike today, but it was the best looking. It was the only C&V bike that I saw today.

I love the way it rides. It fits me pefectly and has a smooth ride and is very responsive without being the least bit twitchy. It tracks stright and true; it corners well and holds any line that I chose. I could use lower gearing for the hills but I will see how this works out for now. The Terry Ti Fly saddle is very comfortable. I like the MKS pedals without toe clips. I have the Ultegra pedals ready if I change my mind.

The Technomic with a 60mm reach put the rendonneur bars in a comfortable position for me. I may have to put one of these stems on my 86 Peloton and go back to using drop bars. Maybe I could find a pair of the randonneur bars for it.

It is great to have this Super Sport back in action.

These are great rides from this particular era I'm told. I've never owned or even ridden one but had 3 different riding partners that had them. Two were raced (one was crashed in a crit pedaling through a corner so I'm assuming the BB hangs low for crits). Bike was tough enough and came out fine.....My loaner rear wheel: Not so much.

Love that red. Hot color for a hot bike.
