Merckx Framebuilder Question: Spade?
Watching "La Course en Tête" last night, I noticed a spade cut into the fork crown on one of Eddy Merckx's personal rides.
De Rosa used a heart, Colnago used a club, who used the spade?
A wickedly enjoyable film, BTW.

I think it was strategic planning on Ernesto's part. Having a few good images of Eddy on a soon to be launched subordinate brand was capitalistic thinking. Colner apparently was a brand that Ernesto created to supply shops desiring his bikes that would have upset those who already had an exclusive sales agreement.
In referencing the Italian Confente bikes the spade embellishment that Mario used was of a different form than either the Colner or Confente USA bikes. My personal view is that the Ferrari's who came up with the Confente USA graphics gave Mario the spade form for which he is best well known. The Confente typography is the same or very close to a Letraset decorative font from the 70's. Letraset rub down type... now that is C&V graphic design.
The Merckx movie is terrific. The club to which I rode for in 1975 has a special screening on the 20th Century Fox screening theater, capacity 400. The fundraising event was by word of mouth only and created a huge traffic jam, it was completely sold out, we could have shown it three more times and still have turned folk away. No subtitles back then and the audience often went wild. I did not hear such a vocal movie audience again until the first Star Wars movie.
Gotta love it where Eddy whips out his Campagnolo 5 mm allen key and adjusts his saddle while racing.

It's a lovely piece of work. I've been familiar with a few of the films of that era (Sunday in Hell, Greatest show on Earth, Stars and Watercarriers) for a while now but this one kind of blew me away. No dorky "pretend" race calling, sped up film, etc. The parts showing his family were very endearing, especially where Eddy is toting his daughter on a baby seat mounted on one of his race bikes.
The epic crash sequence with spooky music may have been a little much though
