My personal favorite; I have both soft and hardbound versions:

I like it for the "common man" approach William Sanders takes in explaining equipment, training and racing.
Bonus: personally dedicated to me by Barbara Hintzen (look her up):

Bikes: Several, mostly not name brands.
I haven't seen "The Data Book" mentioned yet:

Quite often when someone comes up with a "new idea" for bikes, you can find a similar design from many decades ago in the Data Book.

Road to Valor (mentioned above) and Fallen Angel: The Passion of Fausto Coppi are both on my "to read" list.
My dad surprised me with a long-lost box of old books and race tapes. I am especially looking forward to re-reading Kelly by David Walsh, which I remember very much enjoying when I read it as a teenager. Buried in there is also Greg Lemond's Complete Book of Bicycling.

One I cannot recommend is Sting in the Tail, by some insufferable English bloke who rode his Raleigh Pro around the world in the early seventies. What could have been a very interesting book...wasn't.
