St. Pete FL Critical Mass
I know there are a few Tampa Bay Area folks in here who might not check the SE Rides & Events forum, but there's a group trying to get a Critical Mass going in St. Pete. The first one is this Friday.

. The concept sounds great, the execution usually turns into full traffic blockages, mass running of stop lights, etc. If you want cagers to hate you, CM should be your thing.

That's kind of the impression I got. Not sure that's my thing. "Cagers" already hate us enough..

Yeah, I know what you mean. I talked to the people organizing it, though, and they seem well aware of the usual CM pitfalls. From the impression I got, they're trying to raise awareness in a positive way and without raising ire of cagers (or anyone else).
Friday is the first of what they're hoping will be a monthly ride, so I'm sure it'll evolve over time, as well.

Unless they have a really really good plan to keep the militant anarcho-syndicalists utterly in the dark about it, it's going to wind up another wince-inducing, "cager"-alienating PR disaster just like every other CM. But best of luck to them; they're going to need it.

I like "critical manners" rides, in which participants are expected to follow traffic laws and to ride courteously, obstructing traffic only as necessary for their own safety (e.g., taking a lane). However, there is something about a mob scene which tends to bring out the worst in people, and this is one reason I tend to avoid large group rides other than those which tend to spread people out, such as the Los Angeles Grand Tour double century.

Bikes: not enough
You are generalizing, but I concur w/ your main point.

True -- these things seem to vary by geography. We have had a couple of nasty CM incidents in San Diego, as well, which is another reason I tend to avoid these things. Also, I have always been a solo or small group sort of rider.

IMO St. Pete is REALLY bike friendly. This should be happening in Tampa if anywhere. Riding through Tampa is a nightmare compared to St. Pete.
I fully support any kind of "anti-establishment" behavior though, so carry on
