Hello everyone. I am new to this forum. I have been reading a lot of posts last few days. I am thjnking of getting a road bike and stumbled upon a bicycle called Atala campione del monde. I have been riding bicycles since I was a kid. But I always baught bicycles from toysrus. So I figured I ask you guys what you think about this Atala. I am getting the bicycle for 50 dollar. It is in good condition. Also I am 5'4" so I don't know if it is a good match for me. Thanks everyone

Well I can't say for sure if the bike would fit you, but if that bike was MY size and I could get it for $50 I'd snap it up! That's a great deal. It's going to need some work though, this is a good place to learn.

No. 1. Great deal at $50 and it may well fit the OP who is 5'4". We could use more pics to determine value esp. of the drive side, the derailleurs, frame stickers, etc. But even without that info, the bike is a very good deal and may well be a smoking deal.

For $50, yeah, it's definitely worth that. Looks to be in decent shape.

Is the tubing sticker on the seat tube a Columbus one? If so, this is a steal. If it's a Tullio sticker that's not as desirable, but still a deal at $50.

Edit: pretty sure that's a Columbus sticker. And I think the crankset is Campagnolo or Gipemme. If that's correct give the guy $50 and run.

The owner to me he got this bicycle for $400 20 years ago. I hope that helps deciding the value of the bike.

I'm always amused when a Peugeot is described as being a record du monde model, seein' as how that "world record" sticker went on UO8s and lots of others. However the campione del monde moniker seems to be associated with stickers for three years. I don't know the Atala models and couldn't say whether that is the actual model name or just a commemoration of victories. Even so, it looks pretty nice.

Nice Atala, in the right colors too. Get it. You can't go wrong. If it doesn't fit there's sure to be someone to take it off your hands for more than fifty bucks.

Those are fun bikes. Grab it! For $50 you can get your money back and then some if it doesn't fit.

It appears to be a 52cm frame. At 5'4", it's still a bit on the large size for you, but it's ridable. If you leg inseam length is longer than normal, I think you won't have any trouble riding this. I bought a 50cm Schwinn Super Le Tour bike for my ex-wife, who stands 5'3".

Regardless, the Atala appears to be a very nice model. I see a Shimano 600 headset, circa 1978. Columbus Tubing sticker, matching Silca frame-fit pump, LOOK clipless pedals, Concor saddle. For $50, it's an excellent buy. This is a fast, responsive road bike. Have it tuned up and enjoy.

Got some more pictures from the owner. Also found out the derailleurs and chain are rusty. The breaks and gear system are in working condition.. Is it still worth the 50 dollar? The wheels are 26" crossbar is 30" from the ground

Yes. I'd be surprised if the gears and brakes really need more than to be cleaned, lubricated and adjusted. But even then, I'd pay €50 for just the frame if it were my size.

This is a very nice bicycle. I would check if the seat post and stem move freely, just to avoid a possible headache with stuck/corroded parts - but I, too, would very happily pay $50 for frame and fork alone if it fit.

A little surface rust on parts - likely easy to dispense with. Replace the chain.

My girlfriend rides a similar, but slightly earlier (1983) and perhaps somewhat higher-end Atala (Columbus SL, most likely, and a bit more chrome); she absolutely loves it.

I would very much like to see more detailed photos of the lugs, BB area, etc., should you complete the purchase. If you locate the serial number, it may be possible to determine year of manufacture.

Also I am planning on getting another bike for my wife from the same person who is selling the Atala. There are 2 bikes to choose from. One is Raleigh and the other is Fuji. Please let me know which one is better...

Fuji...better equipped.

Unless she is going to be riding off-road, don't get her knobby tires. That argues for the Fuji all by itself.

So Everyone thanks for your support and encouragement. I finally got the bikes this morning. Atala and the Fuji. Please see the pics below and let me know what needs to be fixed for the Atala. The fuji is in working condition and it is really comfortable to ride so i will not post any pics for that.

New chain, new cables, fresh grease in all bearings, new brake pads. Cassette looks pretty rusty, but that's an older style Uniglide cassette, which you'd have a very hard time finding a replacement for, so hopefully it'll function alright.
