Look What I bought for $10!

I saw this Motobecane Nomade for "parts only" as the top tube had a bend in it near the head tube. I drove way out to the boonies, looked it over and paid the $. I have a '74-'75 Moto GJ that the PO had "modernized", so was thinking of today's parts as possible replacements on my Moto to bring it back to more original. Anyway...the frame is being donated to the coop as well as the bottom bracket, which was pitted. It was standard - NOT French. Seat post diameter, and quill stem indicate french sizing.

I believe the front derailleur is a Duopar/Success (solid cage), and the rear is an Eco. Not sure what the shifters are. Please correct me if I'm wrong and offer any other details.

Bikes: Vintage cheapies and some modern stuff.

That's definitely an Eco. I have a 73 Nomade and it has a Huret Challenger that I really like. My 73 has cottered cranks so yours must be newer.

Looks like you scored a bunch of nice parts from a decent bicycle.. As far as the rear derailleur being a DuoPar Eco, I don't think it is. VeloBase.com - Component: Huret Duopar ECO (Version 1) or VeloBase.com - Component: Sachs Huret DuoPar Eco.

IIRC all the Duopar had longer cages. The titanium Duopar on my Davidson tandem is a thing of beauty (at least for a derailleur), though they have a reputation for being unreliable.

Hey all, thanks for the quick feedback. Yeah I wasn't about the even try to ride that bike. I was just so excited to get some more original parts that it was worth the drive. The derailleurs worked but OMG the cables were WAY too short! I should get some closeups of the shifters, as I can't figure out what ones they were.

They are somewhat similar to some I saw on velobase, but not quite exact. Not sure if they are supposed to have the black rubber caps or not. I suspect so. Anyone know about these?

They look like some sort of Simplex shifter to me, but what do I know? I'm an IGH kinda guy.

@ photogravity - here's what I think it is - it's just called "Eco" with no Duopar : VeloBase.com - Component: Huret Eco

It's not a Simplex shifter based on the band at least. The front of the band has a definite "H" on it. So I suppose someone could have put Simplex shifters on a Huret band. Anyway, it's clean and ready to go now.

They're Huret shifters allright. They came on many Eco-equiped bikes, at least here in Europe.

Bikes: Still a garage full

I paid $20 for this Nomade last fall, photo "as found" condition. A retro chrome hand mixer I bought at the same barn sale and resold on ebay paid for the bike, which was overhauled and recently sold to a happy teen. Typicial nice riding entry level bike.

Not Swiss?... not that it matters, if it is pitted.

@ old's'cool - the fixed cup had 1.370 x 24 TPI marked on it, has 2 wrench flats, and was left hand threaded. The cups are pretty good & smooth, but the spindle is pitted. I will keep it along with the cranks in case I ever need something. I can always get a different spindle.

@ non-fixie - Great! Thanks for clarifying on the shifters. I took them apart and cleaned last night. Simple and nice.

@ oddjob - what a nice bike. I wish mine would have been rideable. Maybe with the top tube dent it would have been, but I don't know enough about frames. There is barely a dent as well as intact paint under where the dent is, so..... And just a scratch on the top.

Oh, the chain guard is warped in toward the big chainring. I'm thinking to remove it and maybe put in a vice and gently bend it back. Or lay on a flat surface & take a rubber mallet to it. It's just in one spot, not the entire circumference. Thoughts?

You're only posting this to hurt us mere mortals who never get that good a deal on an old bike. Frankly I would have happily paid $10 for that moto as a parts donor as well. I need a pair of center pull brakes (or old school long reach side pulls) and I'd be happy to find a donor for the parts.
