Sturmey Archer drum brakes
Hi.
Does anyone have any of these (older steel type rather than the later aluminium ones) or feel like sharing their knowledge on them
There were a bewildering array of them with names which don't immediately indicate what the differences were but they all seem to be thin on the ground on the second-hand market.
The rears were
SAB3 - like an AW with a 70mm drum brake on the left
SBR - another 70mm one but on a single speed hub. it seems to share all its brake components with the SAB3
BR - a 90mm drum brake on a single speed hub for use with rod brakes
BR/C - cable operated version of the BR
AB - like an AW with a 90mm drum on the left for use with rod brakes
AB/C - cable operated version of the AB
up front we had
SBF - 70mm hub brake
BF - 90mm hub brake for use with rods
BF/C - cable operated version of the BF
Looking at what I've just written it seems that:
S = small (70mm)
F = front
R = rear
A = rear 3-speed hub
C = cable
B = hub brake
It is confusing however as there is no indicator for rod, and rods are rare now but back then it seemed more necessary to show C for a cable operated part. I suppose if R was used for rod they'd need something new to designate rear..

My guess would be that the 3 speed hubs use the same indicator rod as an AW. But I could be completely wrong!

Thanks for the reply pastorbob but I should have perhaps emphasised that the rods are the ones coming from the brake levers as opposed to the indicator rod.
That's how old these hubs are/were

That's exactly what I'm talking about Aemmer. Thank you.
The bicycle I want to fit mine to is an early 80s kids/teens bike sold in the UK - Raleigh Bomber.
It has 26 x 2.125 wheels with a coloured coating over the chrome. Known as Superchrome.
Obviously with caliper brakes this coating gets rubbed off so I was thinking some drum brakes would be good for cosmetic reasons and for improved braking.
Your rims on your bottom bike looked coloured actually. Are they anodized?

'superchrome' finish on NOS rim

would be nice to have drum/coaster brakes on my Bomber
