Sometimes one just wants to know what time it is, not how to build the watch....
|
Hey awesome thread!
Just one quick question - which kind of classic and vintage bike is this about? |
I have no doubt I've done my share of mansplaining. What with the search function being fubar, sometimes it's easier to answer a question than to find the hundred times it's been answered already. That said, please do not construe this admission as an apology.

"Mansplaining" really is a sexist thing, and I've absolutely experienced it. But I think there's a difference between a guy explaining how things work to the "little lady", and plain old condescension. One assumes that women are incompetent and need to be educated; the other assumes EVERYONE is incompetent and needs to be educated.
Ironically, I've probably over-explained this. |

Yup. I'm neither a man nor an expert in bikes, but I am an information horder and LIVE to do research. Additionally, I love sharing knowledge and helping people out. I work in a library, so my passion for research and sharing what I learn is indulged daily. My problem is, I just can't answer a simple question with a simple answer -- I have to give every detail, go back 300 hundred years to map the complete history, drone on and on and on. "Lady, I just needed to know where the Whole Foods is, not that the town was founded by abolitionists in 1842!" I don't mean to sound condescending, but I'm aware I can come off that way sometimes.

And I totally think in a place filled with obsessive geeks, you're going to find the third thing: the person who just can't help themselves from sharing every bit of knowledge they know, including the most elementary stuff, with no harm meant. Ironically, I've probably over-explained this. |

Even when I don't ask questions about such things. It's just called 'being around others with different interests'. I hope the term never becomes popular in the lexicon.
What grinds me more are snarky answers to noob questions that add nothing, not even humor. The sole purpose is just to declare, "wow you're an idiot for not knowing this..." And to be fair, I see very little of this in this forum. Bringing it back to the C&V forum, I see very little condescension and snark, and lots of helpful, detailed advice. Some people are more abrupt than others, some have more patience, and some are cranks. No big deal. That's dealing with people for you. If I ask a question and I get 10 helpful answers and one snarky, I don't care. I'm happy 10 people took the time to answer. |
No problems with detailed explanations!
More about an issue with condescending tone and/or the put down, not aimed at me in particular, just in general by a few. As my avatar signature says, "still learning," and that goes for most of us here. |

Oh absolutely. I don't mind the term so much, because the whole, "young lady, let me tell you how a computer works because your dainty brain can't comprehend anything that isn't pink and smells like kittens..." really does happen. But it's being misapplied in this context to simply mean "condescending", and I'm not even sure most people in a forum like this mean to condescend so much as they are passionate and knowledgeable in a subject area that the general public isn't.

No! You are an information collector, not hoarder. Information hoarders tend to be in IT or engineering, from countries where small amounts of information have great value or great consequence. I work in health care, and two Asian nations have this tendency in spades. The conversation is totally one sided. You talk and ask questions to no avail and no response. When you finally give your summation, a torrent of talk questioning your opinion comes roaring out. They hoard information, use it, but don't share it. Many countries, especially poor or developing countries, have win-lose interactions. We are win-win here. We want both parties to win. Not like that everywhere! To share information is to "lose" in many cultures.
Actually, I won't. Given the choice between too much information and too little, I know where my preference lies. I couldn't care less about condecention - that's 'their' problem. |
Information hoarding is a pet peeve of mine. There is a certain level of dishonesty in communicating that way. It also breeds distrust in the workplace.
