1988 trek 400 ?
Hey all,
Was wondering if I could get you all to look over this 400 frame and tell me why it does not look like others I have seen or read about.
It's a great one that I got from a BF member here and can't wait to start the build but I have to go through a fast move and it's easier to transport a bare frame then a complete bike.
Anyway, what has me puzzled is the lack of brazen ons on the seatstay and fork. There's no eyelets and attachment points for a rack. I thought all 400s had these. The paint and decals are what a 1988 400 model would have and look original, not a repaint.
Also, did these use Suntour groups ? The chain slap is marked Edge 4050 which belongs to Suntour, not Shimano.
Was there suppose to be a bridge between the chainstays as well. I thought all bikes had these to stiffen up the drop outs. The drop outs have 72 on them, I suppose to designate the degree angle.
If this model was a sport touring one wouldn't the wheelbase be higher then 39", what a racing bike would be ? This 400 has the 39" wheelbase.
I think this is a great example of an early Trek but confused about some of the identifying points. Some insight is welcome !
Thanks.

Thanks all, I knew you all could make some sense of this frame.
So this one is like some other 400s out there. The SN starts with 405 which indicates an 89' year but painted in the 88 colours.
I thought the sport tour set up had brazen ons for racks as I have seen them on other 400s.
I looked at the Vintage Trek site but can not get the cat to show up. My computer sends it to a viewing site that I can't open. Have not been able to by-pass it.
Good to know that Trek mixed up their groups. I intend on doing this frame with either Shimano 105 or Exage 300 parts.
Thanks for the insight and kind responses.
