That crankset looks giant on that tiny frame.

No way this smaller varsity weighs even close to 40lbs, since heavy stuff like fork, frame, rims, kickstand and perhaps even crank, has been seriously down-sized.

Great looking bike now, so perhaps the OP will share the paint finishing and graphics details.

Careful ridding in a crosswind with that pie plate.

I know, the proportions of this thing are pretty interesting. You almost can't tell it is tiny, and then you see the crankset... haha

Besides the smaller frame and wheels it also has a smaller saddle, handlebars and even the crank arms are shorter, but the chainrings remained the same as on the full-sized models. With the combined chainguard it does look huge!

With modern alloy parts, it could come down to a svelte 26 lbs - a sweet riding Varsity for the kids.

I gave one of those for the scrap pile at the bike coop this past weekend and it sure felt like 40 pounds when I was hefting it into the back of my truck.

Well done Spooky! That thing looks great.

My first big bike mechanic project was a Varsity as well, watch out it's addicting! Since my first varsity project a couple years ago I've bought/sold and overhauled/rebuilt well over 20 bikes ranging from low end to high end. I love how I learn new things with each bike. I've come full circle and have recently come into an overwhelming desire to own a varsity again. I just purchased this, a '72 Kool Lemon specimen and it will be getting cleaned up soon:

Since you like small bikes maybe you will appreciate this one I recently found as well. A 1984 specialized Stumpjumper with 24" wheels, it is in very nice condition but will be getting some fresh grease and polish as well:
