I've ridden women's bikes and came away with my ego intact. Do what you like.

Couldn't resist....
This made the news last week. Woman riding a Divvy rental ON the shoulder of the Dan Ryan EXPRESSWAY - CHICAGO! Regardless of no helmet (what difference would it make) she sporting earbuds but I'm surprised she wasn't texting or putting on her make-up.

Proof yet again that fortune favors the bravely oblivious. The only thing that could possibly make this better, is if she were skitching off the side of a speeding bus.

Not to sidetrack... but despite the obvious problems -- getting where she is, and then peddling along the way she is.... .that took some serious brass cojones.

@icepick_trotsky - oh you're absolutely correct. Marketing for one gender or another most certainly happens. So culture has agreed that step through/mixtes are "women's" bikes & diamond frames are "men's" bikes. I ride what I like, regardless.
I don't seek approval from others and could care less about what others think of the bicycle I'm riding. Most of them aren't on bikes anyways, so what do they know!

Yes and No. Yes I would ride a women's specific road bike or mountain bike. In fact my current hardtail MTB is a Stumpjumper previously successfully raced by a woman. I had to put a taller seat tube on it and I kinda like that doesn't have some idiotic pink and violet trim (looks just like the regular Stumpy for that year).
However NO I would not ride a step through frame. Mostly because I don't like them.

It's not so much that I worry about the gender-bent of the step-through frame, anyway. It's more that I feel like kind of a dork when riding a non-diamond frame. But given the size of the dork disks on Schwinns of this vintage, I may have to embrace the uncool vibe.
I've gotten my girlfriend interested in a Soma mixte for her next bike if she starts riding more, and if I pick the frame size just right, I'll be able to ride it, too.

Not problem for me, riding a Step Through, which is commonly called a woman's bike. In fact, I am so sorry that I sold this lovely old Raleigh...
...It was more than a treat to ride around town. It was easy for an old guy to swing a leg over. And, it was fun to ride. Would I ride a woman's bike. Sure!

yeah, over here in euroland nobody gives a rats arse, especially when it come to city bikes. There is absolutely no point in riding a diamond road frame with drop bars when you can ride a nice sturdy city bike with upright bars and a large basket in front for groceries etc.
I ride a bike like this all the time when on cooking duty . Except the one that I use has a lockable headset and a bipod kickstand under the BB, which is a great set up for parking.

I've been thinking about building an old Raleigh or Puegot or Motobecane and the mixtes are always cheaper. I would totally ride a mixte set up for touring with alpine gearing, fenders and racks. I would not ride a step through frame like the Schwinn the OP was asking about. More because I think that they are poorly engineered than anything else though.

When my friend Caleb was living in Boston many years ago, he happened to mention to his landlord, who was an old Irish guy, that he was looking for a cheap or free bike. A couple of weeks later his landlord came up to him on the sidewalk and said, "Caleb! I found a bike for ye!" Then he looked from side to side to make sure no one one would overhear and said in a lower voice, "It's a girl's bike, but if ye tie a bit of broom handle across the top nobody will ever notice."

So when you park it at the stores, you can park it without having to scuffle it in a rack or lean it against something.
Here's a lil' video of the headset in action. It's the bees knees. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vg0_meTSJI

no, the headset has an extra ring on it you can turn to prevent the steerer from turning in the headtube, preventing the wheel from flopping about as you unweigh the front end by putting the bike on the two legged kickstand under the bb.

I ride the Citibikes when I'm in New York. They are step-through frames. It is just fine.

A mixte frame is on my wishlist right now. I'm on the short side and have hip issues, so I find step-through frames easier for me. I was planning on taking my friend's Raleigh mixte because she said it was too heavy for her but she gave it to the bike shop after buying something else.
