I'm pretty sure that bike was built in Greenville MS. The K6xxxxx indicates that the frame dates from Nov. '86 (Unlike Chicago, Greenville used "I" = Sept.) and the 3496 badge date means the bike was built on Monday Dec. 15th 1986. Bikes built at that time would be '87 models.

After some research, I found that le tours and super le tours made in Greenville have a S for the first letter, so mine was a US made bike. Not that that's relevant to the OP of course. This is strictly for posterity.

It's @Scooper, so yes more proof reading!

Interesting opinions here, because at the end of the day, while riding, no one's a$$, or hands can judge which state or country their lugged (excluding Paramounts) Schwinn was built in, only their eyeballs can.

I know I'm a bit late to this party but as I may be looking at a 1987 Schwinn Voyageur this weekend (or next week) I was wondering if anyone has figured out, definitively, if the 87 was made in Japan? I know from this thread the serial number is a clue but it doesn't seem to be 100 percent, necessarily.
Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!

Those 87 Voyageurs are nice bikes and very well equipped!

Yes they are. I've actually seen this bike before; about 6 months ago the same guy had a MTB I was looking at and the Voyageur was there but at the time I wasn't interested. On a whim I called and he still has it.

I've concluded, based on reading everybody's posts here and comparing my 87 and 86 Voyageurs, that my 87 was probably made in the US. FWIW though, I think the Japanese 86 is a little bit better made if you look closely. On the other hand, my 86 is no longer a triple, since it had a bad BB and I replaced it with one a friend gave me from an old Trek...and the "new" BB only accommodates two chainrings. The 87 is still a triple and has index shifting also, so I like it a little better.

I also have a Voyageur from both years and agree with your assessment svg. My 86 has nicer details on the top seat stay ends and is chromed under the paint on both the fork and rear triangle. The 87 has the same type of seat stay tops as an 84 LeTour I owned and I believe that one was US built.

One other difference that will probably result in my keeping the 87 over the 86 is that the 87 has the through fork holes for the front rack mounts and I need that type for my Blackburn custom low riders.

Any pictures of that 86?
Thanks.

I meant to post some a while ago. At the moment it has no wheels and is hanging up in a dark part of the garage I'll put it back together and take some pictures one of these days.
