Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

Won't work because your friend won't be able to hold the punch straight and steady knowing you've had a few beers. If he joins you in those beers, he'll worry less about you which is helpful, but still won't hold the punch straight and steady.

Bikes: 1962 Rudge Sports, 1971 Raleigh Super Course, 1971 Raleigh Pro Track, 1974 Raleigh International, 1975 Viscount Fixie, 1982 McLean, 1996 Lemond (Ti), 2002 Burley Zydeco tandem

I decided to retire my UO-8 a few years ago, and one of the cotters resisted removal. Lots of banging and sweating and cursing, and I resorted to drilling. The drilling took a long time, and even then, it was hard to remove the cotter. I guess I'll always remember that bitter farewell wrenching session.

The Harbor Freight tool worked like a charm on my Rudge.

Bikes: BSA, Confente, Hetchins, Peugeot, Winter, De Rosa (modern), Schwinn, etc...

I was fortunate enough to get a VAR #7 many years ago at the close out price of $18.

$18? That wasn't a bargain, it was a theft. Use it in good health.

Bikes: Too many 3-speeds, Jones Plus LWB

I use the Bikesmith tool. The first step is to loosen the nut one turn. Then I apply the press. After the cotter moves, then I remove the nut and finish pressing the pin. I've yet to run into a case where it does not work but I hear some cranks don't work with it. So far it has worked fine on all three-speed cranks, Chater Lea, Nervar and Stronglight cranks.
